If you missed my new employee introduction a few weeks ago, you’d probably have no idea that I absolutely love Texas BBQ! One of my favorite places to go in Austin is The Salt Lick. Their original location is about 20 miles outside of the city in a little country town called Driftwood. The moment you step out of your car you can smell the wood burning and the meat smoking in the air.

This past week, while I was browsing the community, I came across a community post from a Green Guy visiting Austin for a conference who wanted to check out the Salt Lick! Of course I agreed to go and took pictures of the experience. What was even cooler was that a SpiceHead was at the same conference and agreed to come along!! The pictures are right here for your viewing pleasure:

The BBQ Pit full of tasty brisket, sausage, and ribs.

Look at all that delicious BBQ…

“This was definitely worth the drive out here!”

Man I miss Texas BBQ.

I like the “Green Guy” term. You might want to change it to “Green Person” though, those SpicyWomen can get uppity.

I have heard a lot of good things about Salt Lick, I need to get there one of these days.

Damn it, now I have broken memories of riding in a big ass bus, drinkin’ Lone Star, and getting kicked out of a place at 1:00 in the morning.

I clicked this expecting to see Green man…

Green Guy… makes me think of Blue Man Group and why they’ve never had a female in their group… oh wait, nevermind.

We’re down with the Green Gal term too (we’re in marketing… it had to start with a G as well)

I love Salt Lick! I am so jealous. Definitely worth the drive!

My husband went to school at UT, but we’re in Atlanta now. He really misses it. I was 13-weeks pregnant the last time we went and I still kicked it Family Style! I like to think I got our daughter started on brisket early.

Glad you guys had fun!

Toni

PS… I won’t even get into how many Texas vs. Georgia BBQ conversations my hub has.

Georgia boys can cook - no doubt - but “Q” is very subjective.

For me, it’s Texas - hands down.

I looked longingly at the Family Style, but I think I’d have to prepare ahead - like not eat for a week.

For sure! You have to plan ahead. Family style is definitely THE meal for the day, if not for a couple of days.

OK, it’s on my to visit list next time I’m down that way.

Thank you again for taking us out there Henry! I had a fantastic time and it was great meeting you! We’ll have to be sure to get together again next year when I’m out there and go back to the Salt Lick, or perhaps try somewhere new. I didn’t get a chance to make it to Hop Daddy’s for a burger this trip. However, I did swing by Gourdough’s on Friday before going to the airport. It was fantastic, but if you go do not, I repeat DO NOT, order two doughnuts for yourself. I figured they would be the size of a normal doughnut, similar to Dunkin Donuts, and was sorely mistaken. While the two I got were quite delicious, I went with the Flying Pig and the Funky Monkey, I ate way too much of them and regretted it for quite some time afterward.

David, we’ll definitely have to fast for a couple days before hand next time so we can take full advantage of the family style. If possible you should also bring some of your own BBQ so we can do a side-by-side comparison.

Thank you both again for helping make that trip happen.

Gotta visit the salt lick when I’m over for Spiceworld.

I did act on Henry’s recommendation for Hopdoddy’s - but after 15 minutes of trying to avoid being run over while searching for a place to park I gave up. I’m sure it is worth a wait, but even three blocks away I was out of luck. Maybe next trip to Weirdtown.

On the “next time” list is Gourdough’s, and Franklin’s. For Franklin’s, I may take a day off so I don’t have to worry about being somewhere “on time”.

“If possible you should also bring some of your own BBQ so we can do a side-by-side comparison.” Funny you should say this - it is a bit of a fantasy to bring a rig to the SW parking lot and cook. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to make that happen, but perhaps.

If you are in town (or within driving distance of the Lufkin/Crockett area) let me know far enough ahead to put something together. I’d love to.

A gift from my wife a couple of years ago. I’ve always liked it, thanks.
