Texas gets Barbeque. It’s kind of our thing. And since Austin is the best place in Texas by a mile, we have a lock on the some of the best BBQ in the state, in the South, and maybe even in the country. I Yelped the best places and then rearranged according to my extensive BBQ experience…don’t miss these while you’re here for SpiceWorld!

  1. Rudy’s BBQ : I only ranked this as number 9 because it’s a franchise. It is still delicious.

  2. Lambert’s Downtown Barbeque : It’s delicious, but it’s pricy so I had to rank it 8th.

  3. Bar-B-Q Heaven : Delicious food truck.

  4. House Park Bar-B-Q : Only open for weekday lunch, but if you can schedule it, it’s worth it.

  5. La Barbecue : Free beer while you wait in line for their delicious foods!

  6. Micklethwait Craft Meats : Delicious brisket. So great.

  7. http://www.yelp.com/biz/micklethwait-craft-meats-austin Stubb’s Bar-B-Q: Not only is it delicious, but it’s a cool music venue in a great area.

  8. Franklin Barbeque : SO. DELICIOUS. Seriously. However, everyone basically knows how good it is, so it sells out by 11am most days-- and people line up as early as 7am.

  9. Salt Lick : This is far away, so you’d have to make a day trip out of it, but it’s worth every mile. I went a few weeks ago and briefly considered moving in. It’s that delicious. There is also one in the airport!

If you noticed a trend that everything is delicious, it’s because it is. Go forth and conquer.

I’d also add Iron Works to the list. While not in the same league as Franklin, it’s still good and being right next door to the convention center means you can get a quick Texas BBQ fix and be back at Spiceworld before the next session.

My mouth is watering already - and we just had a rack of ribs for supper tonight!

So far we have had countdowns that included beer, bacon, and BBQ. I can only imagine what’s next.

Franklin BBQ is only going to get more famous, now that Chase has decided to put that restaurant in their new credit card commercial.

And Skillet, what do you imagine as next?

I vote for Chili. The big international championship cookoff is the weekend after SpiceWorld. Viva Terlingua! (See http://www.chili.org/ )

About 10 days ago I went to a small cookoff here in Midland for a favorite charity. It sure put me in the mood for cookin’ chili and tellin’ lies (a favorite pasttime of chili cooks).

Best places to buy hot peppers in Austin?

Since I’m coming in from Kansas City, which is really where the best bbq in the country is, I can say that Salt Lick is very good, but I would have to re-affirm that by going there without being intoxicated -

I haven’t eaten at any of the other places mentioned, but I would like to try Franklin BBQ, as I have heard good things about that from others as well.

Watch it now, them’s fightin’ words!

That being said, even though I’m from Texas were BBQ = Brisket, I do love me some dry rub spare ribs.

I have only had the pleasure of trying Rudy’s, Stubb’s and Salt Lick. So, based on personal experience, I would say Salt Lick is excellent if you have half a day, Rudy’s is great for a quicky (short lines, good flavor) and you can’t beat the atmosphere at Stubb’s.

I’ve lived in Texas most of my life, but I was born in North Carolina. I do like a good brisket, but I’ll take Carolina BBQ over brisket any day of the week.

We have Rudy’s here in Norman, I will attest to the fact that for a chain, they are pretty good. I’ve had various Texas BBQ and, well, to be quite honest, I’ve never had a complaint.

Can you imagine the response if one of the vendors were to go to the effort of picking up a bunch of Franklin BBQ to serve up to SpiceHeads? I think they’d win SpiceWorld.

I plan on stopping in at a couple of those BBQ places Sunday and Monday. One can never have to much BBQ.
