Just wondering, if you had the opportunity to work from home every day, would you do it? Same pay, benefits, hours, and job. Nothing changes but your commute.

Yes! In a heart beat! I actually worked from home for 11 years before re-entering the “workforce” full-time. To be honest I worked more hours, but I loved the flexibility and the fact I could work in any attire I chose! For the past 7-9 years (if my calculations are correct), I have every morning wondered why I have to go to the same place everyday…and for 5 days straight…and then do it again the next week. The silver lining is that at least in this line of work, there is some flexibility that I still enjoy. However, I do miss the nights spent in front of my monitors, listening to music, working while the house was quiet. Thanks alot, now I must look at the clock to see how much longer this day will last…

No, because I would need to drive to work periodically to plug something in or press a button, simple tasks that most of my users would screw up.

I like the option to work from home, but truthfully enjoy the social interaction that comes with working in an office setting. Some days I like to stay in my pajamas until noon and be a hermit with my computer, while others I am ready to chat with coworkers and work in a team environment. However, simply giving employees a WFH option provides peace of mind when you need a day to yourself but are still able to work.

Nope. I like to see people. I worked from home before and it gets a bit lonely. The social interaction and the real life water cooler are fun. I would prefer the flexibility to be able to work from home when I need to and to be able to come in to the office when I need to. I have great work ethic and loyalty to my company so I would work extra hard to hold on to the benefit of flexibility. It would be hard for me to take advantage of that.

I’m with Jess. I’m a solo IT shop and dad of 4 kids. It would be really nice to be able to take a day at home when needed instead of feeling guilty about it. I’m technically on call 24/7 - 365 anyway and 90% of what I do can be done from anywhere.

Not that I’m incredibly far from work (less than 5 miles), but the company is largely about having a physical IT presence, so I don’t think I would even if given the chance. Plenty of people to meet and it’s a change of scenery from home.

I could do it a day or two a week but I would get bored real quick. Plus I have all this hardware that I have to deal with that I would have to come in at some point anyway.

** Edited to remove hardware requirements as a responsibility. Does that change anything?

YES !
Wouldn’t mind to travel to plug some device when the user side of the force take over, or check/fix hardware on a computer.

Nah, I really only work from home when the deathly ill or the snow is too bad they have to close the T. Aside from the value of seeing and working with my co-workers I find I get more done when I’m “dialed in” at the office than when I’m at home when I know I need to do laundry or clean the sink and I just get distracted. I really having a “work Ryan” and a “home Ryan”

I would if I could. Even if I had to go in to the office once a week, it still beats going every day.

No, I wouldn’t mind a few days a week to work remotely but honestly I get more done and out of people by being here in person. Emails and calls are easily ignored but when I walk into their office I have their attention and can get all the questions I need answered right away. With that said, my house is 3 minutes from the office, so I don’t have an hour long commute.

EVERY day? Probably not. But I do quite enjoy the set up I have for myself when I do work from home. The thing I love the most about it? Having access / more time to listen to my record collection. Also, access to a stove so that I can whip up some bacon whenever I want. (Both of these things happened last Friday BTW.)

Yes and I would cook a “Saturday morning breakfast” every day of my life!

i’d like to alternate… i’m sure most of the times, the social and work collaberation would be wanted… but thent here are always those days taht you just want to sit and get on with it… and for them, definitely YEs

I’d have to say I wouldn’t really miss the social aspect - most of what I do is remote or via phone / email / Skype, and I spend my lunches at the gym. So I would still have most of the same interactions. The only difference for me would be not having to sit in Southern California traffic for 45 minutes to go 10 miles (each way).

Work From Home: How Do I Love Thee?

Let me count the ways –

The coffee is mine, all mine,

All the livelong day…

What, you need more reasons…?!?

Not every day. It’s nice to be able to do so when there’s a reason, but tbh I far prefer the chit chat and social side of being in the office.
