In wake of Apple’s unveiling of iOS 26, Google has officially confirmed that we’ll see the “final” Android 16 launch later today.

A post from the official Android Developer Twitter/X account overnight – or early in the morning, depending on your timezone – states that it is “almost time for the Android 16 final release,” and the key point is that they’ll see us “back here tomorrow.”

There’s nothing cryptic about that announcement, and given the smaller scale of the initial Android 16 launch, it might come as a bit of an anticlimax after Apple’s substantial overhaul announcement yesterday. That said, this initial rollout is the precursor to a frankly massive Material 3 Expressive update that’ll come with Android 16 QPR1 in just a few months.
Thanks to the Developer Previews and Beta phase, we have a reasonably solid idea of what to expect from the Android 16 launch. The highlights include battery health metrics, Live Activities for specific applications, Advanced Protection, quick Google Wallet controls, plus more cosmetic and usability changes.

As noted, bigger changes will be forthcoming later with the launch of Android 16 QPR1. The changes there affect even more areas of the interface, from minor cosmetic changes to entirely new options, including major overhauls to the Quick Settings panel and Settings menus, plus various other areas of the OS. No time was mentioned in this post, but based on previous launches, we would expect the rollout to begin mid-morning Mountain View time.
For now, we suggest ensuring your device is charged and ready for when the OTA eventually drops.
