Wyze’s clever new accessory lets you power a camera using a light bulb

Wyze has just launched a new “Lamp Socket v2” accessory that lets users power their cameras using a simple light bulb fixture, while also making those bulbs smart in the process.

The Wyze Lamp Socket v2 is a pretty simple product on the surface. It connects to any standard-size light bulb socket, with the extension still allowing you to connect a light bulb to the other side, but adding a USB port for power and some smarts along the way.

The main purpose of this product is to provide power to another Wyze Cam. With this v2 edition, you’re getting 4x the power output compared to the Lamp Socket v1. Where the prior generation could only power Wyze Cam v3 and v4, the new one can power Wyze Cam v3, v3 Pro, v4, v4 Pro, Pan v3, and Wyze Cam OG with its 20W output. Essentially, it can power the majority of Wyze’s lineup simply using a light bulb socket, saving you the trouble of running power or dealing with solar panels.

Beyond providing power to a camera, Wyze Lamp Socket v2 still provides some smarts for a regular light bulb (though Wyze says you shouldn’t use incandescent bulbs due to heat issues). This includes typical on/off controls, as well as a motion sensor to make your lights be motion-activated. You can also group together multiple Lamp Sockets in the app to control all of your lights at once.

Wyze Lamp Socket v2 retails for $19.99 through the company’s own website, and is also available on Amazon for a few cents more (where it’s also shipping immediately).

This joins the Wyze Bulb Cam which launched earlier this year as a self-contained camera/light bulb combo that similarly draws its power from a light bulb socket.
