Apple has launched public betas for iOS 26 and its companion updates, including a HomePod software 26 public beta. Here’s what you should know about the release.
New HomePod beta introduces at least two new features
Today Apple launched its long-awaited public beta program for iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe, and more.
There’s even a public beta available for HomePod and HomePod mini.
The new HomePod software 26 is rolling out now, and you can sign up for access on beta.apple.com.
HomePod 26 is primarily a compatibility update to ensure your HomePod devices work well with other Apple products running the latest iOS 26 software.
However, during the developer beta cycle two new features have been discovered:
- Crossfade is now supported for Apple Music playback
- You can view and change your HomePod’s Wi-Fi network
Crossfade has long been supported by other Apple devices when playing Apple Music songs, but it’s long been missing from HomePod.
Coincidentally, Apple’s other products are getting a new take on Crossfade this year called AutoMix. So even though HomePod is catching up in one respect, iOS 26’s AutoMix feature will keep the iPhone a step ahead.
The ability to view and change Wi-Fi networks on HomePod is a great, long overdue upgrade.
Even though HomePods are supposed to automatically connect to the same network as your iPhone or iPad, it’s not uncommon to encounter Wi-Fi connection issues that require troubleshooting.
Thanks to HomePod 26, that troubleshooting is made much easier than before.
Before installing the HomePod software 26 beta, know that pre-release software might always introduce bugs and other performance issues to your devices. As a result, only sign up for the new beta if you’re willing to take that risk in advance of the expected public launch this fall.
