So, I’m Canadian, and it is October. That means “weather talk” has turned to winter thoughts. Like when will we get snow, was there frost on your windshield today, etc…
And in the mail I get a letter about my nice, still kind of shiny 2016 car…
So… you’re saying if it gets cold and I plug my car in… I might get a toast fire to warm up with? And the fix, interim of course, is to cut off the cord?
/facedesk
You couldn’t figure this out in august when I use my remote starter to cool my car?
Now my car is new, and I’m lazy, so I’ve rarely plugged it in and never had an issue… but really? If only I hadn’t had to cancel my trip to spiceworld then I’d still be blissfully unaware of this… for a few more days.

That is ridiculous maybe they should include they will pay for all dead car batteries as well

What the heck? So there is no fix? Are you going to get a different car or replace the block heater?
I feel your pain… winter in Fargo is no day on the beach.

In other news…“IT directors across the country are implementing a security feature to keep their networks safe. They are directing SysAdmins to cut the ends off of all the Ethernet and Fiber cables coming into the datacenter. Brilliant!”

Just set a small little fire under the engine compartment. That will keep things nice and toasty.

So that’s what passes for a remedy nowadays, huh? As I read this, I…

I think I’d send that to the Canadian press and Transport Canada. File the complaint with Transport Canada as a reduction in paid for functionality, which is what this one is. Which manufacturer is being stupid this time?
Grand Forks here. It’s the wind… THE WIND! Madness.

Oh they will fix it, and for free… they just… I dunno don’t have enough replacement block heaters to swap them out at the current time.
yeah.
Not the best time to send a notice like this, but…

What? This is a block heater, not a battery charger.
Had one installed in my sports car. Makes it easier to start on those cold New Hampshire mornings.

True, but cold starting will drain your battery much faster. Lead acid batteries are not nearly as efficient when cold.

I’m appalled you didn’t repurpose a 60W light bulb for the task. Shame!
I read that the cut cord is only an interim remedy, I would assume that new cords that are not a fire hazard are on the way. Cutting the end is the cheapest fastest solution for the dealer. This is really no different than the HP Deskjet power cord recalls of old. Please stop using your device, send us your cord and we will send you a new one. So effectively you stop using your product while they sort out their s$%t.
Was this a Toyota by any chance? I always find it funny that people who buy imports rarely want to name names when discussing recalls but people who buy North American cars always do. I think that helps perpetuate the myth that imports are still vastly superior to domestic, even though the amount of components that are the shared gets bigger every year.
Anyone who really wants to know already knows:

Do you have a Diesel car/truck? If so, that will suck even worse. Where I come from we don’t worry about htis, (DR) but now in NJ I do worry with colder winter temperatures.
So they want to have you bring your car to the dealer so they can cut the cord and put a warning on the end?
I think most people could manage to cut the end of a cord off. Even non-IT folks.
Lame.
@justin5198-spiceworks the way you wrote this insinuates that your “sports car” is one of your various automobiles that you have in your collection for use on those days when anything else simply will not do. I like the cut of your jib sir

We Floridians use light bulbs to warm items in our “Winter months” you know when it gets down to like 60 degrees or 15.5 Celsius for our euro’s. I use a light bulb at my well pump to keep my pipes and tank from freezing the 3 nights a year it might dip to 30’s

I thought Canadians were rugged outdoorsmen. That being said, in the cold months there, or basically all year ;), I thought you all would curl up around your engines like a cat or small dog curls up in your lap.
