As a part of ongoing efforts to improve the security of our applications and services, we are making some infrastructure changes that will make some features stop working in older versions of the Spiceworks Help Desk and Inventory (Desktop) app.

Starting January 1, 2018, we will only support Spiceworks Help Desk and Inventory 7.5.00077 and later. If you are using a version of Spiceworks Help Desk and Inventory app older than 7.5.00077, you should upgrade to the latest version from spiceworks.com/downloads as soon as possible.

What breaks if I stay on an old version?
If you choose to not upgrade, key features of your app will stop working. We are migrating the services that the Desktop app uses for a number of things, including: allowing admin users to authenticate with their Community credentials or reset their password, admin user Community profile avatars and other Community user related integrations (private messages notifications, etc.), the backend service for the in-app “parts finder” tool, Desktop app upgrade notifications, reporting exception stats, and allowing admins to share and update report templates or create and modify knowledge base articles. All of these functions will no longer work on older versions of Spiceworks Help Desk and Inventory (7.5.00074 and earlier) after January 1, 2018, when the migration is complete.

How do I check my version?
Login to your Spiceworks Help Desk and Inventory app and scroll to the bottom of any page - the footer displays your version in light gray in the bottom right. You can also go to Settings (using the link in the top right), and your version will be displayed in the top right.

Ok, I’m on an older version. What do I do?
Today, the latest version is 7.5.00101. Simply upgrade the Spiceworks Help Desk and Inventory app as you normally would to prepare your installation for our service migration. Upgrade and you’re done! If you’re upgrading from version 7.2 or earlier (!), take a look at this guide .

I’m already on the latest version, but I received a message indicating I needed to upgrade.
Sorry about that! No need to worry - we tried to err on the side of caution, so some of you might have received a message telling you to upgrade even if you were already upgraded.

If you check and your install(s) are running 7.5.00101 (or any version from 7.5.00077 and higher) you’re all set. It’s that simple!

Why the special notice?
We always recommend updating Spiceworks to the latest version to patch your installation with the latest bug fixes, security updates, and features . The infrastructure changes we’re making warrant special notification in this case, because our changes directly affect older versions of the Desktop app and you would otherwise be unaware. If you contact us to get help with an older version of Spiceworks (7.5.00074 and earlier), we’ll ask you to upgrade just as we would typically do, otherwise.

Curious about what’s coming soon?
Spiceworks Inventory and Help Desk version 8.0 is on the way! Check out the beta if you want to see what we are working on.

I have questions or problems upgrading.
Please post up in the Desktop app support forum or you can email us at support@spiceworks.com.

Hay, Ben, just a heads-up: I had what I’m guessing is an automated email from SW warning me about this. It said that I appear to be using an older version but I’m not - I’m on 7.5.00101 and have been for several months.

Just thought you might want to know.

Hi guys, thanks for letting me know. There are a few reasons we might’ve emailed you even if you’re already running the latest version. We tried to err on the side of caution, so you might have received the email even if you were already upgraded.

It’s ok, though - if you check and your install(s) are running 7.5.00101 (or any version from 7.5.00077 and higher) you’re all set. It’s that simple!

EDIT: I updated my post to include info about this, as well. Thanks again!

Hi, Ben, our Organization is running version 7.5.00068, so I know we have to upgrade. My question is this, we host Spiceworks on a separate server, so we would have to upgrade it there, right? Also, how will this affect our using Spiceworks while it is upgrading? Will we have to reboot the server after the upgrade is done? Please advise. Thanks.

Hi Robert, you’re correct - you’ll need to run the installer for 7.5.00101 (the latest version) on the server where Spiceworks is currently installed and running. Typically you’ll have a “spiceworks” service listed in the Windows Services list (services.msc), or you can look for a “spiceworks.exe” process in the Windows Task Manager.

The installer will take your Spiceworks installation offline, upgrade it, and bring you back online. Typically this just takes a few minutes to complete, but it can take longer. No reboot is needed afterwards.

If you need help with the upgrade just shoot us an email to support@spiceworks.com. If there are problems with the upgrade and you need to get back online on the older version immediately you can us the restore process .

Thank you, Ben, I appreciate your help. I will keep you posted, I’ll be doing the upgrade towards EOD.

Hi, Ben, my Organization missed the upgrade deadline. Am I still able to perform the upgrade?

Hi Robert, absolutely. The same instructions and process still applies. If you need help with anything just email us at support@spiceworks.com - support is free just like the app.

Right on, thanks, Ben!

Hi, Ben, one more question:

What happens to tickets that are created while the update is happening? Do they get re-synched, or does the whole system go down and tickets are lost? Please advise, thanks.

Robert4617, tickets are not lost during an update. Emails just remain queued in the help desk mailbox on your mail server, and will be read/processed by your Spiceworks app once the update is finished and the app comes back online.

Awesome, thanks, Ben!
