Working in IT presents plenty of exposure to modern tech solutions - Solutions that actually solve big problems and face up to modern challenges - Of course, there is always the other side of the coin- Have you ever witnessed someone use a voice assistant to turn on a lamp they were sitting right next to? Or perhaps someone use a bazooka to crack open a walnut?
However impressive a technology may be in function, perhaps not everything needs a high-tech solution. (Though I do admit to being a fan of this guy’s self-proclaimed “unnecessary” inventions)
What are some examples of unnecessary/absurd tech you can think of?

Any use of semiconductors for useless joke items like the Staples Easy Button or this POC

Looking at the list of “inventions”, I have to say that if he needs the jewel cooler he bought the wrong car. I used to own a 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 (yes the Army of Darkness car, had I know that was going to get that big I would have kept the damn thing) and it had an air conditioner vent located in just the right sport that it was known by owners as the “ball chiller”

Wow, forgot about Google Glass, wonder how the first buyers feel about their dusty tech?
That page is hilarious, just looking at the images of some of them is enough for a laugh

I cannot remember what the brand is, but smart water bottles. I’m all for IoT and connected devices but I draw the line at hydration.
Tesla. Self driving that doesn’t fully work, and plaid mode. Nice to have to pay to beta test stuff.

Anyone remember that KFConsole? The KFC PC that plays games (top hardware) and makes chicken. I mean, absurd… but amazing.

The most annoying thing is the “you may have won a car” dingus in my junk mail, It’s a little plastic box with an LED and a battery to backlight a serial number after you uncover it. Total waste of materials to something a scratch off would handle and I never go to the stealership to try it out.

The 5 computers (ECU’s) built into my 2006 Corolla.
Oh I remember this absolutely iconic moment haha - Precisely the kind of absurdity I was looking to be reminded of here
I got tired of waiting for it to drop so I opted for the budget-version lol

WiFi enabled appliances. Nothing like sitting in the living room watching tv and wondering if the washer is still going. Grab the phone open the app and see if it is still working or go take a look.

I set up our cat feeders to activate with a voice command to our Google Home using IFTT.
Now they know the phrase, so we can mess with them by saying 1 word of it differently so it doesn’t work. =]
Completely unnecessary, but fun and hilarious (for us.)

Anything that contributes to the “WALL-E” syndrome. Using an app to set your tub water to the perfect temp and letting you know when the tub is full? A “smart” kettle to boil your tea when you already have to be there to fill it with water and again to pour it into your cup? Refrigerators with touchscreens that will automatically shoot your shopping list to an app?

I remember they used to call “glAssholes” all the people who wore Google Glass.
