I have been running Carbonite Server Backup for just over two months. Over the holiday weekend it stopped uploading backups with an error about there not being enough space to store the backup in the cloud. We had enough space so I tried restarting all of the services. I got an error “Carbonite remote management service could not be started. Contact Support.” So I did.

This is a production server so I wanted to see if there is anything I could do short of a reboot. I was told by an unfriendly Tier 1 guy that I was to uninstall the software and reinstall. (Side note: Pet peeve that uninstall and reinstall was the very first troubleshooting step.) I reiterated that I wanted to try something that didn’t require a reboot. The tech said it would not. I uninstalled without the requested reboot the uninstalled prompted me for, reinstalled. Issue persisted. It was obvious that providing me with support was just too much trouble for grumpy Tylor so I asked for escalation. Grumpy pants said I would have to let them perform the uninstall and reboot the server so that they could “make sure it was done correctly” before the issue could be escalated. I was told this was company policy. At this point I just wanted to get away from unhelpful Mr. Grumps. Fine, we all have bad days, I will call later so that support can make sure I next, next, finish on an uninstaller.

Additionally their portal doesn’t have any way that I could find to check the status of my ticket. At this point I am wondering if Carbonite is a suitable professional product. Certainly not impressed with their support.

They get two stars because they support Hyper-V full machine backups.

This product SUCKS! Used it through 2 annual contracts because the issues seemed to subside toward the end of the first. Backups constantly crashed or failed to upload. For EVERY call to support, regardless of the issue, their solution was to uninstall and reinstall the client. Fought with their support COUNTLESS times. Finally got escalated to a “supervisor” one time. The FIRST words out of her mouth, before even reviewing the issues with me, “Well, if your network isn’t configured properly…….!” At this point, I nearly had a seizure. Do your self a favor and STAY AWAY.

Absolutely NONE. The software stinks and the support is worse.

EVERYTHING!!

A client chose this solution as it has a build-in cloud backup. After testing, purchased product key. You can’t just enter the key or assign the key anywhere… no, you need to Uninstall the product, download it again and install it. It wasn’t made obvious that that’s the procedure.

It backs up to the cloud… yay…

product re-installation seems the go-to solution when having problems.
