Does anyone use Dell’s AppAssure software for back up? I keep getting calls from Dell regarding how I need to sign up and get this into my company, that its the greatest thing ever. I said I wanted to research it, so he sent me a bunch of links for info, but of course they are all Dell website links, with of course all great comments. I want to get feed back from the people who actually use the product, someone who has no skin in the game. All honest feed back is appreciated.

I used to use AppAssure - back from when it was Replay and then got bought by Dell. Service and support went out the window. Other than that, we are a Dell Shop.
Unitrends is our go-to backup vendor now. Couldn’t be happier!

Can’t speak on the AppAssure, but both Veeam and Unitrends are phenomenal. Actually building a Unitrends appliance as we speak, to backup my Dell cluster =P

Starting to be the same with VMWare, all three have not been as polished since being purchased by Dell. Gotta love a near monopoly that just buys it’s competitors.

Dell - fantastic hardware, mediocre support. Our customers always call us to find a part after being told by Dell ‘replace the motherboard’ for every issue.

We currently are using AppAssure, and we find it meets our needs since we’re in a mixed physical/virtual environment and it lets you do a bare metal restore or file level restore to dissimilar hardware (like Veeam’s endpoint product). We’re getting ready to move our entire infrastructure to Azure though, and when I spoke with AppAssure support they said you can’t restore to a virtual instance from their appliance without access to the underlying hypervisor, and we didn’t see (we also didn’t look terribly hard) a way to boot a provisioned Azure VM from a recovery ISO (AppAssure’s workaround suggestion). With that limitation, and plenty of other file-level backup options available, we decided to not renew our support contract with AppAssure. If we weren’t moving to a platform they don’t work on, we’d probably keep using AppAssure.

This is all to common in this business. I often wonder how many of these companies dodge anti-trust lawsuits. I could list some specific examples, but quite frankly, they all do it.
