No keyboard or mouse

New PC install. Wireless keyboard / mouse (Logitec) install froze. PC recognized a USB transmitter with a “found new hardware” but never finished installing the driver. After forcing a restart wired keyboard or mouse no longer work. PC boots to a “PC locked” log in screen.

I have no way to type or click anything.

sometimes it helps plugging the keyboard in a different usb slot… or if you should have a ps2 adapter, that will most certainly help you get access (with the wired versions at least, maybe wireless too if you have separate usb connectors)

Personally, I’d just restart the installation if keyboard gives me problems and a different USB port gives me the same issue. Start with the wired keyboard. The BIOS should still react to keyboard input.

I removed wireless keyboard adapter and moved wired keyboard to different USB ports. I tried to boot without the keyboard and got the “missing keyboard” message so BIOS “reacts” to it. What do you mean by “restart the install”? PC came with OS installed. Should I reinstall windows? How to do it withouut a keyboard or mouse?

Do you have remote access to the system?Try removing all the USB drivers In the device manager menu and have the device install it again, click View and enable Show hidden devices > expand Universal Serial Bus controllers you will most likely have a bunch of transparent entries, which are all non present and/or hidden devices > start deleting them one by one.

Then restart the system. If it still not working log back in remotely and start updating drivers. Update your BIOs, chipset drivers, video then go from there. Also might be worth removing the CMOS battery to reset the BIOs if you are still having issues

Reinstall windows. Presumably when you load the boot disk up, your kb/mouse would work because basic drivers come on the disk. Seems your install got borked somehow. Does it recognize any other USB devices? (headphones, flash drives, etc)

Before attempting some of these “set the world on fire” solutions, let’s go back to the “asking better questions” scenario and get some more relevant (and COMPLETE) details first.

Which OS are you using?
Are you able to get into BIOS and do the keyboard & mouse work there?
You say “PC locked screen” and assume we know what you mean. Please transcribe the exact message you’re seeing or post a photo of the screen so that we can see the context around the message.
Is this computer on a domain or is it a standalone? Does it have an auto-login?
Can you download the USB hub driver for that particular model from a different source, just to have on-hand?
Does the computer recognize any other USB device?

Thanks for all responses. My new Dell XPS Win7 is working. Following yours and others advice I shut down the PC, removed the power cord and pressed the power button for 30 sec. Moved the wired mouse and keyboard to a new (third) location, pressed F8 during start up. I was able to use arrow up on the keyboard to select the Safe Mode. When the Safe Mode boot finished I noticed the mouse was not working and the keyboard was out again. Desktop was showing a frozen page from McAfee antivirus introduction . About 15 sec later the the mouse and keyboard came back to life!

It all may started when I plugged the mouse and the keyboard on the top of the desktop (USB with Lighting Bolt and USB with a plus symbol)?. I was told those ports might require additional software my PC didnt have during initial install or was it McAfee, Paolo0111?

Say XPS is to say little or nothing, but my understanding is that this series of desktop computers (and a couple of laptops) only establishes Windows 10. If you chose Windows 7, I believe that you will hardly by Dell the necessary support: I highly recommend you check available drivers among the most updated.

If you found to some unrecognized devices, the old pcidatabase could help you, provided they are among the supported: http://pcidatabase.com/
Patching the operating system, Microsoft often provides generic driver suitable, with the necessary calm.
As a last option, you should turn off the unrecognized devices in order to avoid any conflicts with other in use.
With regard to the USB sockets with the symbol of external power, should not be a problem, but keep them as a second option.
Finally, is the physiological time of several tens of seconds to automatically install the USB device drivers; we are still talking about an operating system some time ago, and it could also be that McAfee has requested additional time to verify that they were actually a mouse and a keyboard, whereas often “donate” some funny USB sticks that act as keyboards, operating real brute-force attacks.
