Which kind of sensors do you want to include, in addition to your CCTV cameras?

When I had an alarm system, it was ordered and installed by a local electrician company and did not include CCTV cameras. Now I have some NAS able to build an alarm system with CCTV cameras but did not decide to proceed into that direction.

I also had a video surveillance installed at one workplace with video recorded on SD card inserted into the camera. I don’t remember after which time I provided feedback to the company owner that I considered his solution not appropriate. I think it was somewhere between half and full week. It was not due to SD card. It was instead of insufficient resolution. He had chosen a cheap camera with VGA resolution. For the monitored area, I recommended to use 1080p resolution instead. If your monitored area is larger, you’ll have to test if you’ll need higher resolution. And your requirements might differ for cameras installed within buildings and cameras outside. Especially cameras for outside, you’ll have to consider how they get their power supplied and how to send their data. If outside cameras are installed in a manner that unauthorized 3rd parties may easily cut cables and no local recording happens, then you could spare such a location as it makes little contribution to physical security.

{"@type":"Person
scheff1
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/scheff1"}},{"@type":"Answer

Not sure about alarm, but Synology NAS’s have a built in surveillance application which works for basic needs, works with standard IP cameras, but if you’re looking for a more professional solution, then best give some more details on your situation

{"@type":"Person
Kenny8416
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/Kenny8416"}},{"@type":"Answer

There’s lots of video systems out there that do not require cloud connection.

Alarm systems are a little different, but I am sure they are out there. I don’t remember if Honeywell Vista or DMP have apps or anything like that which don’t require the panels be cloud linked (meaning you would need to port forward your router for linking). Some may be able to send an SMTP email to alert.

{"@type":"Person
LuisC
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/LuisC"}},{"@type":"Answer

That’s may writing of QNAP too. They have appliances and NAS, both supporting video surveillance and notification (alarming). They also list supported software which is able to connect to sensors and actors for smart home, IoT, including alarm systems if DIY is desired. Then it would be up to the OP to look for hardware supported by such NAS or appliance gateways. He may choose to contract a local security company to receive the alarms. Sending alarms directly to law enforcement services is discouraged as analysis of false alarms is not their job and billed to the source of such false alarms in several jurisdictions like mine. And QNAP offers some calculators for determining component needs based on number of cameras, recording history desired, configured camera resolution and a few other properties.

QNAP has email and SMS notification included for alerting and the alarm system may trigger a siren if such an actor is installed. An IFTTT agent is available for such rules. It’s all on-premise. And if you attach a UPS, it may act also some time when criminals switch off the standard power supply of rooms or the building.

{"@type":"Person
scheff1
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/scheff1"}}]}}

Welcome.
Please have a read here:
Over the years of reading questions on SpiceWorks, I’ve come to the conclusion that there are a few simple ways that nearly all of us could get better answers, better advice, more information by changing how we ask questions. Here are some tips that I’ve learned (this is not about break/fix questions but about guidance questions…)
Always give the business background. No IT choice is made outside of a business context, so provide us with the drives on the decision. Need product type X? Do you …
Without you giving more information, it’s hard to give a reccomendation
e.g.
how many cameras do you need?
how long do you want to store the video for?
Do you need to access the self-hosted (I assume, since you said non-cloud) from remote?
how big is whatever you want to monitor?
how many sensors do you need (typically each room has at least a motion/infrared sensor, or the common areas)
etc.
Please help us help you by giving more information.
