Need a script to move files into folders

I have thousands of files that were consolidated into a single folder that were previously saved in a complex folder structure. I have the path’s for the original folder structure. I need a powershell script that will recreate the folder structure and move the files into it’s corresponding folder.

Have you looked into robocopy? It has a ton of features build in?

What’s the format for the data with the paths?
Is each file in one record with the previous full path OR something else?
If something else, explicitly describe the data with the info.

I have an index in an excel spreadsheet. The current locations and previous location are in separate columns/cells. Is it possible to create a script that would create the previous folder structure and move the files to the corresponding folders?

Example

Current Location: Previous Location:

Sometimes I use Excel to write large batch jobs. Quick and dirty:

Copy all the original paths into one column.
In the next column, use formulas to separate the filename.
In the third column, use a formula to concatenate a COPY command from the one location into the correct folder location.

Yes, you will need to recreate the original folder structure, but hey it gets the job done.

Example

Current Location: Previous Location:

C:\Temp\File.msg C:\Folder\File.msg

This is very doable. You’ll want to learn about File & Directory objects. So, in a PowerShell console, do:

gci | gm

Look at the Object attributes, particularly the Properties.
Create yourself a little test bed on a machine with throw away data and try some things.
This isn’t too hard once you see the relationship between Files and Folders and how to deal with their properties.
