Remote network position, free labor

I’m currently looking for work and have a proposal for someone that is currently overwhelmed. I’m offereing my services for free, for the experience. I like to learn and I enjoy my work.

May I suggest that you post an availability schedule that is fairly firm? I think these days, clients are very conscious about reliability. Taking the guesswork out up front might help.

I have a question, or maybe two.

You’re offering your time for free, to learn, and are offering to help those who are overwhelmed - I’d expect someone in that position to want you to dive right in and get on with tasks, but I believe you would perhaps want them to guide you through the processes first (as part of the learning). One can only hope that they have the time to show you before allowing you to proceed. Task depending, that could be a few months if not more of training or guidance.

Your profile shows you as having your own company, from this, what skills do you have to offer any clients who may wish to take you up on this?

I’m not asking for myself, nor to be nosey, but to assist anyone who is keen to get a little about you first without having to ask. It may help you if there is a little spiel about your current skillset or offerings.

I posted something similar on another topic similar to this not long back.

My suggestion would be schools, colleges or universities - not only could they use extra help, but they may offer you a course as part payment and skill you up at the same time - never hurts to ask local businesses either.

Path to cyber security? IT & Tech Careers

I am posting on here again as I got such great insight from everyone on here. I have narrowed down the area of tech that I would like to work down to cybersecurity. I’ll start backwards.

I live in a small town and there aren’t a lot of opprotunites. Many companies around have subscribed to managed subscriptions. I do small jobs, but would like to find a network with steady work manageing, adding users and assigning addresses. I’ve rebuilt several large companies networks, using a combination of MDT images and work with international network with VPN. I get to discover entire networks and fix them up and replace equipment, automate processes and protect their systems with a great firewall and protection for their email and computers.

I work with vmware. I setup servers, domains, Active directory and some azure along with cloud servers. I don’t have extensive experience with AWS.

I’ve fallen behing with the newer cloud based technology, while i’ve been attempting to update old network to 2000 technology. I’m very experienced troublehsooting DNS, network and usually Firewall issues. I’ve set up cisco routers before UI and now they are pretty simple.

I honestly don’t know what I’m lacking. I keep running across remote jobs that require all sorts of system & programs I’m not familiar with. It is that chiken and egg issue that I red in the threads I explored in the path to cyber security, Rod shared. I hope to remotely manage systems. I remotely repair personal PCs and some commercial.

I’m not looking to volunteer just for simple hands on. I’m looking for more complex systems and network.

Can’t get a job without relevant experience, and can’t get the experience without a job. I really like to see what eveyone has in the way of cyber security. I hear that area has a shortage. I’ve found it to be more a collection of software and hardware. I’m not sure what manual work there is. I’ve conquered ransomware.

I’m like most of you. It all is second nature and it all is pretty simple. I just don’t have the opprotunity to work with more complex systems.

As far as a schedule… winter is a very slow time here. I’ve got a wide open schedule. I only have pop-up work that I knock out fairly quickly.

What you are lacking is answered in your own post - experience of systems that are non-standard for regular home PCs.

From what I am reading most of your work is for personal clients or SMBs, most of which use very limited, software - as in, not many products. Larger companies and corporations use bespoke software or other Microsoft products that regular home users would never even hear of. The only way to know these is to use them in a lab or work for a company which does. Bear in mind that all the jobs you have seen are paid, if you are offering your skills for free, call the advertisers and ask if you can speak to the employer, advise while you don’t know product A, B or C, you are willing to give up your time, to be able to better yourself. If they have anything they can offer you, paid or unpaid. Just chat with them, let them know you are here and send over your resume for future, should they wish to revisit.

While you don’t have the experience of products outside of what you already know, you do have IT experience, that’s a start.

I would recommend you try to assist people with their queries on here, use the ‘answer questions’ at the top of this page and read through other peoples issues and offer your support and guidance. Whilst you wait for someone to reach out, you might as well show your skills off.

Use the platform like a visual resume, where people reading can see your skills.

Have you spoken to any local companies, schools or universities, either about direction or offering them your services, have you handed out any resumes or do you even have a current one?

Finally - my usual suggestion, if you do not currently have a lab, I’d get one, people here would be more than willing to set you homework tasks and there is even a category on here where people can discuss their labs and what they learn.

I’ve learned so much on here by participating in topics, maybe you will too.

I suggest you look for a non-profit in your area, volunteer your time and ask for references. You’ll likely meet a few people who can help you get started.
