Hello all,

I have an on-prem install of Spiceworks. I have recently migrated my Exchange 2010 mail server to Office 365. I am running a Federated domain and using ADFS for authentication. I have been unable to get Spiceworks to connect to any mailbox in Office 365 for incoming mail using either Exchange or IMAP protocols and I believe it might have to do with using ADFS. Has anyone run into this and gotten it to work?

I ended up changing my tenant authentication from ADFS to Pass Through Authentication. We are exactly the same setup (AD syncing to O365) and it works just fine for us.

I created a real mailbox (can’t be shared) and licensed that user in O365.

In Spiceworks I am setup for the following:

Outgoing

SMTP (not Exchange) and the host is smtp.office365.com on port 587 (turn on requires auth and put in the email address and password)

Incoming

IMAP on port 993. Use SSL and enter your users email and password.

{"@type":"Person
bruceforbes7564
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/bruceforbes7564"}},{"@type":"Answer

@Bruce5601

Are you using ADFS for authentication and not just AD Connect?

{"@type":"Person
carpio
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/carpio"}},{"@type":"Answer

Sorry it is AD Connect that I use but I don’t see how that makes a difference. You are hosting your email on Office 365 and those are the settings that allow you to connect to it. Are you hybrid or strictly Office 365?

{"@type":"Person
bruceforbes7564
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/bruceforbes7564"}},{"@type":"Answer

I’m hybrid right now but looking to decommission my on-prem servers soon. And yes… ADFS does make a difference since ALL authentication goes back to my domain and is not handled by O365.

{"@type":"Person
carpio
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/carpio"}},{"@type":"Answer

Didn’t know that about ADFS. I was thinking of switching over so this will definitely be something to be aware of since Spiceworks isn’t the only thing I have going on that I need to connect to a mailbox in Office 365.

I guess I’ll have to watch this thread to see how this works out. Spiceworks isn’t designed to work with ADFS. The setup Bruce mentioned is really the only way we’ve seen Office 365 and Spiceworks play nicely together.

I have seen threads where folks using ADFS were able to get email working, though. For example: Spiceworks and Office 365

{"@type":"Person
jonm
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/jonm"}},{"@type":"Answer

IF I read that thread correctly I think they are saying that they created a new email address (and I assume not using AD but actually in the portal) that they use for Spiceworks?

{"@type":"Person
bruceforbes7564
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/bruceforbes7564"}},{"@type":"Answer

I believe so. That’s how it sounded to me as well (portal vs AD).

{"@type":"Person
jonm
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/jonm"}},{"@type":"Answer

@Jon That thread is from 2012. Creating a new email address doesn’t work… I tried. I believe the problem is I am running a Federated Office 365 tenant using ADFS Modern Authentication and that won’t let anything that doesn’t support OAuth2 tokens work. I can’t get Spiceworks to connect using Exchange settings or SMTP / IMAP. In fact, I can’t get any devices to connect using SMTP / IMAP.

{"@type":"Person
carpio
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/carpio"}},{"@type":"Answer

That’s a big problem for me then. I have a number of devices that send email via SMTP (printers, etc) which I could get around easily I suppose by using my own SMTP server but my phone system and my Customer Service helpdesk systems both require a full mailbox for sending and receiving.

{"@type":"Person
bruceforbes7564
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/bruceforbes7564"}},{"@type":"Answer

I have devices like UPSes, Firewalls, and SANs that send notices via SMTP so I just whitelisted my public IP with Office 365 and they just relay through without issue. I have Spiceworks doing the same too but still have the incoming email tied to an on-prem email account. I also have another external service that needs to connect via SMTP and I’m not gonna whitelist something external to allow relays. I want to kill off my on-prem server but can’t do so until I get this figured out.

{"@type":"Person
carpio
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/carpio"}},{"@type":"Answer

Ahh, gotcha. I can see the OAuth bit being the problem. "" Sadly, there’s not really a way to make that work with Spiceworks.

{"@type":"Person
jonm
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/jonm"}},{"@type":"Answer

I read somewhere that I should look into an SMTP / IMAP proxy to get through this issue but I haven’t yet figured out what I need to do to get one setup.

{"@type":"Person
carpio
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/carpio"}},{"@type":"Answer

No worries! Right now, I don’t know of any plans to work on this bit. I just noticed this thread has been marked as SOLVED. Definitely NOT solved in my eyes. I still need a solution to my problem and this issue is not restricted to just Spiceworks. Why not just set up a shared mailbox directly in O365 for Spiceworks and forget the AD authentication altogether? We have an O365 shared mailbox set up for SW and it works.

{"@type":"Person
scottm1979
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/scottm1979"}}]}}
