I’m not sure what your experience is, but I will assume that you are very new to the field. My suggestion would be either read the CompTIA Network+ book, or take a class in networking. If you choose to utilize just the Network+ book, you may have to bring in other resources to help understand many of the concepts. Youtube can also be a excellent resource for how-to’s and other types of information. I think that once you understand the basics of networking, then you can potentially explore more advanced topics.

Reference material is good but I have found that configuring a router/firewall at home helped me a lot along with reading up. It also helps if you can work with someone for a few weeks or longer on a specific firewall. Find someone you can shadow or intern with. We recently had to install a bunch of firewalls for a client. Though I didn’t do the configuration work, I worked with the guy who did and installed some of them at the client sites.

I have installed a few different firewalls in my home just to get familiar. Juniper, Sonicwall, and Mikrotik currently (not all at the same time).

We ran Xbox through them, wireless, RDP and FTP routing to different ports, wireless isolation, vpn, and some other things. My kids weren’t happy about the Sonicwall’s performance with the Xbox but that was more of a Nat thing between the Xbox and the Sonicwall rather than a reflection of the Sonicwall’s business capabilities.

Good luck with it. Depending on if you have a family or roommates, you may want to schedule a time where the interruption of your live testing will be less of an issue at your place of residence.

Bah…my apologies. You probably are wondering how to get access to some of that equipment. Well, if you find an active networking community or business that you can be friendly with, they may loan or give you some of their old equipment.

You will want to work in GUI and command line for some equipment as well—just to get the hang of it. You can get a wealth of information from the command line interface from equipment that may be difficult or impossible to get from a GUI interface.

Sonicwall’s without licensing will not have certain features available. I am sure other firewall vendors are similar. However, you can do most of the basic to moderate level work.

I am not a firewall guru I just keep testing and learning where I can.

There are literally tonnes of pages out there that can provide more information. Google can help find them, as well as books on networking.

As to simple… hmm. Networking can get pretty complex.

Buy one off ebay, set it up at home. Or if you company will buy it for you to set up in a lab, go for it. Best way to learn for me is by doing it, so I have a lab at home with a bunch of stuff.

pick up a CCNA security book.

read it, do labs. Then read it again and do more labs.

Although they teach you more about cisco equipment, they still teach you the fundementals of Network security - which will be able to translate well when you deal with other Firewall solutions.

However, there is nothing simple about networking. I remember doing several labs where I had to configure site-to-site vpns. In theory, simple. In practice, way more than I was expecting! I was super intimidated! But the more I did it the more it began to make sense. Policing took me a while to grasp. acls within groups within maps; it can get confusing, but the logic makes sense.

There is a metric tonne of stuff that you will need to jam into your head. It is a vast, vast field. But very fun and very interesting (if that’s your thing)

Get your hands dirty! Find an open-source firewall/router/etc. and start playing around. Come to Spiceworks for tips & tricks. Repeat.

Depending on your current experience, but i’d suggest grab a copy of CompTIA Net+ book, or keep an eye out on Humble Bundle as they have done various ebook deals for a slew of infosec, hardware and software ebook bundles;

They’re doing a coding your own games bundle at the moment, but will probably do some more networking bundles soon.

https://www.gns3.com/software might also be worth a look, there are also several guides on the internet to setup a raft of VM’s and then play with them in a safe environment, recommended you just put them all on an internal network in your hypervisor.

Whole-heatedly agree with Chad (Untangle)! 99% of my knowledge and expertise has been Google, Spiceworks, and breaking my own stuff to figure out how to fix it (or, more accurately, breaking it in the process of trying to figure it out only to have to redo and learn from the mistake :-)). Everyone here has been immensely helpful with the questions I’ve raised and I’ve been as helpful as I can be with topics on which I’m knowledgeable. There really isn’t much if any substitute for experience. PFSense or Untangle (and others exist) are very powerful and free firewall OS’s. They can provide the flexibility and features that high end, expensive enterprise solutions do for a fraction of the cost (actually for the cost of a machine that could be simply lying around already). Couple that with an inexpensive smart or managed switch and you can immediately start learning about VLAN’s in addition to firewalls and their ACL’s.

Ask questions! When you get stuck, post a question. I have subscribed to many networking feeds on Spiceworks and I know plenty others have to. We will all endeavor to assist in any capacity we can. Good luck!

I would take a look at the CompTia curriculum like their book for the Net+ certification exam. When it comes to firewalls, if you want to learn vendor specific like Cisco or PfSense, I would recommend getting a book or watching full tutorials on those. Learning firewalls can be tricky because many firewall appliances handle the rules differently. It might be similar but notations and firewall rule processes will vary. I like to buy a piece of hardware and spend a good amount of time messing with it and watching videos on how to get the most out of it.
