Honestly I don’t see what the big deal is. I’ve been helping out in the community for around a decade and it says I have 9 helpful votes. I’m trying to find a reason to keep helping others, but I’m not seeing it. This just shows how ungrateful people are and why I should stop wasting my time helping them. Prove me wrong and I’ll continue to help, otherwise I’m moving on to more pressing projects.

I like this idea so that we can point out those people that are helpful a lot more often. I think a lot of the time the OP’s just don’t have to time look at each post and say helpful or best answer especially when there are pages of answers. It just isn’t always feasible. At least this way our peers can give us recognition as well. I already have 23 which was a nice surprise to me so thank you!

If you don’t want to help others because you aren’t getting recognition for it that’s fine. Just don’t expect others to help you as much either. When you stop helping others because they don’t praise you enough for it is the moment you become one of the ungrateful ones too.

As for those of you getting your knickers in a twist, to quote dimforest “no reason to be THIS upset over an update. It’s just a site. Chillax” - don’t like it, don’t care about it, scroll by, move on ffs. This thread started to sound like Facebook and I purposely come here NOT to have that.

I am not even subscribed to this thread and could care less.

As a SpiceLeader, I can do the same to my SpiceCorp group when needed.

It is kind of a smart ass comment. And unprofessional. I will be complaining. I could see if I had been commenting on this thread, but I have not been a part of it, and it looks as if it was directed at me. Maybe think about the message your sending and who you are sending it too.

Jared Busch’s comment didn’t sound like he was trying to be rude. But it’s all based on perception; how you perceived his comment and how I did. He appeared to just let you know in a few words why you were notified of changes, and that he could do the same to his own smaller/selective group about changes impacting them. Only the SpiceyPeppers group was notified.

A second thing I’d note is that, though I was also included and didn’t really care a whole lot about the change, I didn’t make some comment about ‘I could care less’. Maybe take a different posting approach and don’t be so defensive; you’ll come off as a more genuinely nice person to engage with.

Don’t worry. Ignorant people don’t bother me. They are everywhere.

If you’re receiving messages for a thread that you don’t want to receive messages for, try clicking the unsubscribe button. I realize you feel like you shouldn’t have received the message to begin with, and I’m not going to argue the point. There are times where I get the same post 4 times, so the system isn’t perfect. We’re in IT and should realize that systems messing up is the norm. However, unsubscribing might keep these messages from being sent to you. Good Luck!

Hi all, this was my mistake. I actually sent out a group PM to two areas (Admin & Mod and then Spicy Peppers). Normally I’m a little more… verbose (chatty, won’t shut up) but today I was a little too quick to the point and basically did a link dump to make sure all of them knew about the update to helpful votes (since these are some of our most helpful people). Ironically, I did it in a way that wasn’t quite so helpful. I do apologize!

Well I didn’t know about the change until you sent this, so it’s a thank you from me for being helpful (even if it was accidental)

It really isn’t. Though I disagree with some of what he says and some of his philosophies, I find myself agreeing with him a majority of the time. There has been more than one occasion where I thought my opinion was one way but after reading his post realized I was initially wrong. The community is definitely better off with him in it.

You wanted suggestions on improving this system. The helpful votes system provides a way to show whether or not a post is useful. It also provides a way to show that an individual is knowledgeable about subjects when their post is up voted. Both of these are good, however the system fails to take down votes into account.

For example, you are showing that an individual is knowledgeable about something if they have been up voted 100 times, but you aren’t taking into account the 500 down votes they received.

As you can see, this doesn’t give a clear picture of the individuals knowledge and helpfulness. This deals more with deciding whether to follow someone or not. The way it displays on the post is fine. On the post we only need to see that the post is useful, not the individual. Also, putting in a negative counter balance might help keep people from posting irrelevant, nasty, or mean posts.

I grew up on the mean streets of NYC, where everything was an argument (what you’d call a discussion). We’d argue everything - often taking the opposite side of whatever the other guy said, just to stretch our minds. And, of course, to be argumentative. New Yorkers argue about everything - sports, money, weather, and more. We refine our ideas in the fiery forge of personal interaction. The point is to make us think about the subject, not just have an opinion.

If “one” can’t conceive of any possible way in which “one” might be incorrect, then that person is truly closed-minded and will never learn anything. The path to knowledge starts with the phrase, “I could be wrong, but…”

That makes sense - the NYC bit. I grew up in SoCal, Tennessee, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, etc… I don’t know what that says about my discussion demeanor but there you go.

I grew up essentially always believing that while I’m probably wrong about everything, I still feel like I have a better grasp on things than most other people and 90% of the time the argument/debate isn’t worth winning.

I really don’t care about the points. It’s more about people giving credit when credit is due. I mark people’s posts and I thank anyone who helps me, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect the same. If you notice, I can’t get any points by posting in this thread. However, I’m still making suggestions to SW on how to improve the system. I also posted in a SpiceCorps thread helping someone find a local meeting this morning and I can’t get points for that. I’ve also shared reports, how-to’s, scripts, and feedback with the community. Obviously, I don’t have a problem helping others. However, too many people in this community have time to get an answer and not be grateful enough to give the community members credit. These same community members are undoubtedly not helping others by answering questions.

Joel, maybe I’m misunderstanding you, if so, I’m sorry. However, I have to disagree that a negative opinion is necessarily bad. Many negative opinions over the last decade have helped shape the direction of Spiceworks. The SW development team tells us their ideas to see if we would find them useful. If enough people agree that they will be useful, SW moves forward with it. If too many people disagree with the idea, they either tweek the idea to fit how the community will find it useful or drop the idea altogether. Granted they don’t do that for everything, but they do pay attention to our feedback. If they release something that they didn’t get feedback on first, they listen to how the community reacts to it. Depending on how the community reacts, depends on what direction they take. Granted that was how things were from version 7.5 and before. Since they started developing version 8 that mentality seems to have changed. Now they seem to be disregarding the opinions of those that helped test and improve the software over the years.
