Basic rule, no posted pictures showing more than 20% of your skin. NSFW and age restrictions have lost all meaning when social media and dating apps basically reached 90s music video standards.

Nope. No Global rules. Global rules would imply Global governance of the Internet, and I don’t want that. Individual countries can do as they please, and some do better than others, but the idea that we should all submit to one great master is scarier to me than any potential benefit.

Probably an unpopular opinion amongst my peers, but @roger-knowbe4 once argued here (https://community.spiceworks.com/t/how-phishing-and-swatting-will-likely-be-finally-ended/) that “pervasive, assured identity” is probably the only thing that can seriously take a bite out of the crime enabled by a fully-anonymous internet. Obviously the devil would be in the details and it’s hard to imagine the pieces coming together in the one permutation that’s both private/anonymous-enough, safe from abuse, but identity-discoverable. But I think about that idea a lot.

Remove the quizzes from social media. If one more person posts the results of their personality test which is actually how the bad actors are getting the PI (Personal Information) in the first place…

Force all social media accounts to require MFA every time you are accessing the account. If the phone in your hand can do facial recognition to unlock, the social media accounts can do the same. Probably just pissed off an entire generation with this one.

If you could enforce one data privacy rule across the entire internet, what would it be?

For me, there should be some kind of competency test you have to pass, kind of like what you have to do to get your drivers license, before you are allowed to use the internet. You should know the dangers before you go in and start spreading your info out there. There are some people who simply should not be on the internet at all (My father in law being a prime example), they are too trusting and believe anything they read on the internet.
There should also be protections to people on the internet, you should not be able to “put it all out there” like you can do on social media. If it is an option, people are going to do it. It shouldn’t always be up to the end user to protect themselves, those companies profiting from all this should take some responsibility and regulate it to some extent.

Interesting theory. Only comment I would make is that people can often fake or pass a test with ease without learning anything. I think our generation would call it “cheating the system”.

When I worked at a School District. We got the teachers to teach Some kind of Internet/Digital Responsibility (I Can’t remember the exact name we used) for the younger grades. We reinforced the importance of protecting your identity and digital footprint on the internet. I think it was somewhat successful, but once they were allowed on the internet, all bets were off.

What rule would you enforce across the entire internet?

Not really sure if this counts as a “rule,” but I feel like anything you post on the internet, it must be read back to you with a “Are you sure you want to post this?” button. Maybe that could be a good usage of AI… it reads it back to you and maybe lets you know how it might be interpreted or ask you to clarify some things.

I do wonder how many things on the internet, especially social media, that might not ever get posted if it is read back to the author first.
