Why are Device Images changed to the logo of SCW?

I’ve notice that some of my devices, like my HP dc5800 PCs or my Cisco switches, no longer display a picture of the device, but instead show the logo for Southern Computer Warehouse. When I view the page source, I see the following for that element:

This started in 7.5.9.8 and the upgrade to 7.5.10.1 didn’t fix it. It’s a pretty logo, but I’d rather see a picture of the device.

You should be able to click it and remove that image, and a default one will load or you can upload your own.

However the card view you have on is slower than other views because of the pretty images

I’ve noticed the same thing even in the Browse view. The SCW logo comes up for the device in the details section after selecting a device. I checked removing that image, but only have the option to ‘Change Icon’ using an existing file or import a new image.

After checking out the source, it looks like some devices get their image from CDW as well, but those images load correctly. Images with a source from SCW do not work, at least the ones I checked.

I’ve found the same. Spiceworks attempts to download a picture of the device if it knows where to find one, otherwise it uses a URL like /images/scan/default-icons/desktop.png. For my HP 6000 MT units, it’s coming from //static.spiceworks.com. For my Cisco / WS-C3560G-48PS-S switch, it’s //img.misco.eu. However, for my Cisco / WS-C3560G-48TS-S switch, it’s using //eproc.scw.com. Has Spiceworks been relying on SCW to supply images and SCW has decided to start handing out their logo instead?

Since I don’t have HP devices I cannot speculate, but my Dell Devices either have a logo and others are just blank.

I’ve seen this happen before. Spiceworks uses a number of outside resources (as you’ve already mentioned) for images. This can happen when a site isn’t loading correctly, or a vendor decides to change where images are hosted (basically if the URL goes sideways).

Let me see if I can find the information on this from last time, and see about getting it fixed up.

Hey all. If you’re having this problem, I’d like you to try two things for me.

Try clearing your browser cache and see if the images correct or not.
Try running the following SQL report and let me know which devices are giving you trouble:

select 
image_url
, model_name
, vendor_name
, community_product_id
from product_info
where image_url like '%scw.com%'

I’m not able to reproduce this on my end with any of the HP devices we have on site, so know if it’s specific models would help.

And the problem is back, in Sept. 2018. Lots of people commenting their computers now look like poops or frogs, etc. Hey Spiceworks, you know what would fix this really easily? Allowing people to just pick their own icons for their hardware. #SadFace

You can edit the images in the Inventory - pull up a device’s details and hover over the image, you’ll see a Change Icon link. You can upload images of your choosing to replace the default images pull from Community.

Thanks for the reply. I know we can change the icons at the bottom, but the ones at the top are unchangeable by us mere proletariat.

Ah - I see what you mean. Looks like the external images (if available) will overwrite uploaded images. Images you upload are only usable if the device doesn’t have a crowd-sourced image from the Community. There’s some buggy behavior around that too - sometimes images don’t load as expected or may “reset” to the crowd-sourced images.

Keep a look out on the thread I linked. We’re still working on at least resolving the “emojis” that are showing up.

In line with the plans for Inventory we likely won’t change the way user-uploaded vs. crowd-sourced images are handled, in general, though.
