You do not need to register an external domain I agree, but MS best practise says you should use the same internal domain name as your external domain name. Not owning an external domain name and then later trying to buy the same as what you used internally may prove tricky if it is already owned by someone else. It may also cause other issues with DNS resolutions

.local domains are not supported or recommended and the domain should be in the format, ad.yourdomain.com, although domain.com also works for your internal name (please do not use domain.com though)
