DJI’s next product launch is all about digital worlds

DJI has dropped a new teaser for a product launch scheduled for July 17 at 8 a.m. EDT, and it’s geared toward the drone mapping community. The tagline? “Make the World Your Digital Asset.” The teaser video features a swirling cloud of 3D data points, aka point clouds, transforming into a majestic Japanese castle.

Curiously, that tagline isn’t new. In fact, it’s prominently used on DJI’s official website to describe its professional mapping platform, Terra.

Those familiar with DJI’s enterprise ecosystem likely know that DJI Terra software allows professionals to convert drone-captured images into precise 2D maps and 3D models. It’s used in surveying, construction, infrastructure inspection, public safety, and even cultural heritage preservation.

DJI Terra has already played a key role in high-profile projects, including efforts to digitally preserve Karatsu Castle in Japan. There, drone imagery was processed into textured 3D reconstructions, ensuring the structure’s legacy could live on in digital form for future generations.

At its core, the software allows users to:

  • Capture high-resolution imagery using DJI drones
  • Process 2D orthomosaics and 3D models with photogrammetry or LiDAR
  • Plan missions with advanced waypoint and oblique flight tools
  • Generate point clouds for precise measurements and reconstructions
  • Work offline for security-critical environments

It’s these features, plus support for high-end sensors like the Zenmuse L2, that have made DJI’s mapping solution indispensable to professionals across industries.

So, while DJI hasn’t confirmed what exactly it will reveal on July 17, the symbolism in the teaser is hard to ignore. The transformation of raw 3D data into a Japanese castle mirrors real-world use cases that this software already supports. It’s a poetic nod to how drone technology can protect history, build infrastructure, and digitally immortalize our surroundings.

It won’t be surprising if this launch marks the arrival of a new version, perhaps a significant upgrade to the software’s capabilities, UI, or processing power. Previous updates have added AI-based water surface reconstruction, seven-parameter transformations for coordinate accuracy, and multi-GPU support for faster workflows.

Whether it’s a full relaunch, a major version bump, or the expansion of DJI’s digital asset ecosystem, July 17 is shaping up to be a big day for geospatial professionals and drone mappers.
