Joy-Con 2 Repeatedly Connects/Disconnects From the Console

Nintendo Switch 2

Use this article when the wireless communication between the Joy-Con 2 controller and a Nintendo Switch 2 console is repeatedly interrupted, causing the controller to lose sync and resync.

Before you start

You will need:

  • Your Nintendo Switch 2 console
  • Your Joy-Con 2 controllers

What to do

  1. Test the Joy-Con 2 controllers in TV mode, with the console docked.
  2. Confirm that the dock is connected using a Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
    • The HDMI cable included with the console is an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
    • If the HDMI cable being used is not an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, swap it out for a supported HDMI cable.
  3. Remove the console from the dock, and test the controllers to see if the issue still occurs.
    • The issue only occurs while the console is docked
      • Confirm that you're using an "Ultra High Speed" HDMI cable to connect the dock to the TV. If it's not Ultra High Speed, your console won't perform as expected when docked.
        • If you're using a different cable than the one that came with the console, it should have printed on the cable that it's "Ultra High Speed."
        • The HDMI cable that came with the Nintendo Switch is not "Ultra High Speed" and should not be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 dock.
      • Confirm that you're using a powerful enough AC adapter. The Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter (model NGN-01) or another AC adapter that outputs at least 54W should be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 dock.
        • The Nintendo Switch AC adapter can be used when plugged into the Nintendo Switch 2 console directly, but due to to differing power outputs, it can not be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 dock to support TV mode.

If the wrong cables are being used, change them out for cables that meet the requirements for Nintendo Switch 2 and see if the issues still occur.

  4. Attach the Joy-Con 2 controllers to the console.
  5. Check that your console has the latest system update. If so, restart it.
  6. Check if the Joy-Con 2 controllers have the most recent firmware update.
  7. Detach the Joy-Con 2, then start a game or navigate through the menus to see if the Joy-Con 2 stays connected. If they still disconnect, continue with the next steps.
    • How to detach Joy-Con 2 controllers from a Nintendo Switch 2

Important: After detaching the Joy-Con 2 controllers from the console, be sure to attach the Joy-Con 2 straps before starting a game or software.

      1. Press the release button on the back of the Joy-Con 2.

  8. Press the SYNC Button on the Joy-Con 2 once to reset it, then press any button, such as the A Button, to power it on again.
  9. Test the Joy-Con 2 while the console is in Airplane Mode.
  10. Check for wireless interference. Make sure the console is not placed behind a TV, under a metal object, or within four feet of other wireless devices (wireless speakers, cordless phones, etc.).
  11. Test the console with another Joy-Con 2 controller (either left or right) if possible.
