Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, experienced a global network outage on Thursday afternoon, Starlink said on X (formerly Twitter).

The service started being reported down by users around 3:30PM eastern time Thursday. Official confirmation came from Starlink at 4:05PM on X stating that they were aware of the outage and working the issue.

Users on the Starlink app saw “optimizing connection” or “offline” during the outage and were unable to access the internet.
Service was restored after about 2.5 hours down.
“Starlink has now mostly recovered from the network outage, which lasted approximately 2.5 hours. The outage was due to failure of key internal software services that operate the core network. We apologize for the temporary disruption in our service; we are deeply committed to providing a highly reliable network, and will fully root cause this issue and ensure it does not occur again,” said Michael Nicolls, Vice President of Starlink Engineering, on X.
Elon Musk also chimed in during the outage saying” Service will be restored shortly. Sorry for the outage. SpaceX will remedy root cause to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
According to the Starlink website, the service has over six million global users and counting. During today’s outage, all users, from private to business, had no internet access via Starlink.

The service now has over 7,800 satellites in orbit and services over 140 countries, territories, and other markets.
