We want to move a esxi 5.0 vm server to a physical box. If anyone has done this migration I would love some tips.

3 Spice ups

did it once as a test.

-full backup with system state (windows native)

-install clean OS and restore.

I would suggest you look at Double-Take Move (for minimal downtime migration), or use any full system backup with bare metal restore to dissimilar hardware - Unitrends, Acronis, Storagecraft, etc.

the key is going to be making sure the software handles the hardware and driver differences required for your physical box

Albert - Dave is spot on. A dissimilar BareMetal restore will probably be your best bet for this migration. With Unitrends, it’s super easy to do, but does require a paid license so that you can perform a BareMetal backup & a file level backup. Please let me know what questions you may have about this.

We typically recommend moving workload content (can be done with RoboCopy to preserve file rights & owners) and provisioning new server. V2P is tricky and never works really well.

End up doing a whole new build and just moving software

Thanks for the update Albert!
