Janice Holt Giles mentioned at 2025 Writers Day The Adair Arts Council Writers Day took place on Saturday, with strong attendance from both authors and readers. Darlene Campbell, the event organizer, gave generous support and encouragement to every presenter. She also emphasized the significance of Janice Holt Giles, a renowned author from Adair County. She was born in Arkansas in 1905 and later moved to Indian Territory, Oklahoma, where her father worked as a teacher. She became an accomplished and well-educated woman, moving to Louisville after her first marriage ended, working for the Dean of the Presbyterian Seminary. In 1943, during a bus trip, Janice met Adair County soldier Henry Giles. They corresponded during his deployment and married immediately upon his return in 1945. They settled in Knifley, Adair County, Kentucky. Article continues... click here to read the whole article, or to share, print, or bookmark it. 2025-06-15 15:03:43 | Comments | See topic Books
Happy Father's Day 2025 We wish all fathers a joyous day! There's more to being a dad than earning a living and being an advisor to teenagers. According to researchers in the Fatherhood Project at the Families & Work Institute, interacting with dad is crucial for child development. Researchers now know that even interactions with your infant or toddler influence how your kids will relate to other people later in their lives and how they will view the world at large. Every day of contribution to a child's physical and mental health and welfare is vitally important. Click here to share, print, or bookmark this article. 2025-06-15 10:48:59 | Comments
Basketball: Indians finish Lindsey Wilson Shootout 4 and 2 By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer In their first game on the final day of the Lindsey Wilson Shootout, Friday, June 13, 2025, The Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team fell to the Caverna Colonels 78-48. The game was never close, as Caverna ripped off a 15-0 run to begin the game. The Indians offense struggled mightily against a high pressure Caverna defense. Adair County would eventually get their feet under them and start making shots, but they were never able to slow down the Caverna offense enough to threaten the lead the Colonels had built. Dawson Gilbert led the scoring for the Indians with 16, followed by John Shehan with 14, no one else for the Indians posting double digits. The team faced Bowling Green High School later in the day. Last year's Indians squad split games with Bowling Green, beating the Purples in the regular season and losing in the postseason. In the Lindsey Wilson Shootout, the Tribe was able to get the win 57-54 over Bowling Green. The Bowling Green team, much like Adair County, is searching for production after a mass exodus of players, thanks to graduation. Adair County compiled a 4-2 record in varsity matchups in the Lindsey Wilson Shootout and a 2-1 record vs 5th Region opponents. The Indians will continue summer play on Monday, June 16, 2025 at Russell County. Click here to share, print, or bookmark this article. 2025-06-14 13:05:24 | Comments | See topic Sports

Basketball: Lady Indians improve to 4-0 By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer The Adair County Lady Indians Basketball team remains undefeated in summer ball action. On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, they knocked off Leslie County 52-32 to improve to 4-0. The Leslie County Lady Eagles came off a 10-17 season that ended in the first round of the 54th District Tournament. However, they are a team that only graduated two seniors, neither one of whom were massive scoring contributors, combining to make up just 5% of the scoring and 12% of the rebounding from last season. With this win, the Lady Indians have now outscored their summer opponents a combined 217-168, for an average margin of victory well into double digits. The Lady Indians will keep rolling and keep improving as summer goes on and they work towards the season. Taking a few minutes By Veronica Arnold While cutting hay or brush hogging, many farmers take extra time to protect wildlife. Yesterday while I was cutting I noticed a little fawn. I managed to stop and move the fawn to the fence line in teller grass. Of course, the baby kept running into the brush. This meant several stops to remove the fawn. I didn't mind, as the baby deer was so sweet and called his momma. Taking a few minutes to preserve life, totally worth it. I then left a small pile of grain near the fawn for momma when she comes back. Does seen in the field this morning leads me to believe all reunited and ok. Carol Perkins: A valuable legacy Previous Column: The new rug By Carol Perkins My father, Henry Sullivan, passed away in 1977 at the age of 62. I thought he was old, but I now realize how young he was. I've written about him before, but occasionally I'll think of something special and want to share, especially near Father's Day. A good friend told me about how she and her husband took their TV to my dad to have it repaired. He owned Sullivan's TV and Repair, which was the shop next to my mother's house. "I liked your dad," she said. "We'd talk and then he'd play the fiddle." My dad could do both very well. His musical talent, a gift from God inherited from both the Sullivan and Acree (my grandmother's) sides, blessed the entire family. My dad played string and horn instruments, favoring the saxophone and fiddle. These instruments are now in our son's possession. I was thinking about what a musical and artistic legacy he left behind. No other explanation has been forthcoming via the Go Kinetic App, live text or phone. Flag Day: 14 June 2025 Columbia and Adair County have the wonderful tradition of flying the American flag on city streets and at businesses. I doubt that you can stand anywhere within the Columbia city limits and not see an American flag flying. The same goes for homes out in Adair County. We are a community who gives honor to the symbol of our country. From Russell Lunsford, Commander VFW Post 6097 Columbia Flag Day is a celebration of the American flag that occurs each year on June 14, the anniversary of the flag's official adoption. What we know fondly as the "Stars and Stripes" was adopted by the Continental Congress as the official American flag on June 14, 1777, during the Revolutionary War. Colonial troops had been fighting under many different flags with various symbols--rattlesnakes, pine trees, and eagles. The early flags had inspirational slogans; "Don't Tread on Me," "Liberty or Death," "Conquer or Die." On that 14th of June, Congress made the Flag Resolution of 1777, stating: "The flag of the United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, with a union of thirteen stars of white on a blue field ..." Governor lauds 2024 as best year on record for KY Tourism Louisville, KY - On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, building on the New Kentucky Home initiative, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that 2024 marked a new record year for Kentucky tourism, with $14.3 billion generated in economic impact supporting 97,394 jobs, as tourism remains a key piece of the commonwealth's booming economy. According to the state's full list of economic impact and jobs by county at www.kentuckytourism.com (PDF), tourism directly results in more than 800 local area jobs, generating more than $19 million in labor income and over $100 million in spending in the 7-county area.
The Governor joined state tourism leaders at the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory on Wednesday to celebrate the third straight record-breaking year for tourism in Kentucky. "Kentucky's tourism industry is experiencing the biggest historic winning streak we've ever seen. Thanks to the hardworking people in this industry and Team Kentucky's ongoing investment in tourism, we're welcoming more people to our New Kentucky Home and celebrating three straight years of record-breaking economic impact," said Gov. Beshear. "This win is more than just numbers; it's about families creating lasting memories and our communities thriving. Together, we will keep this momentum going and showcase what makes Kentucky so special."
