Dark, cynical, and subversive, Heathers gently applies a chainsaw to the conventions of the high school movie -- changing the game for teen comedies to follow.

Kevin Maher The Times (UK) Still shocking after 30 years... this definitive blast of teenage nihilism is strong medicine indeed. Rated: 4/5 Aug 10, 2018 Full Review Richard Combs Sight & Sound If there's a weakness of motivation in Heathers, it may be because the whole film is rather dream-like, a product of Veronica's fevered writing and imaginings, with a consequent chaos and interchangeability of roles. Aug 10, 2018 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Heathers really is odd, like a mix of something by Stephen King and Bret Easton Ellis... Rated: 4/5 Aug 9, 2018 Full Review Rachel Wagner Rachel's Reviews (YouTube) stands out all these years later as a unique and dark look at high school Jun 9, 2025 Full Review Alan Jones Radio Times Beneath the hip, lip-glossed surface of this devastatingly witty black comedy lurks a serious satire on peer-group pretensions and other teen movies. Rated: 5/5 Jul 31, 2024 Full Review Terry Francis Southern Voice (Atlanta) Roughly the first two-thirds of Heathers is sharp and illustrative. Finally, though, it lapses into teaching the audience a moral, that good ultimately triumphs over evil. May 9, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Emily W Quick-witted, surreal, and surprisingly kind-hearted for a movie coated in violence. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/08/25 Full Review Audience Member Saw it when it came out- watching now in 2025= still good. The commentary was better back in those days but that's to be expected. Ryder and Slater were great- it's a quirky weird movie with interesting social applications. An easy add to your collection. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/29/25 Full Review Nick O I believe Heathers should be screened for every freshman on their first day of high school, letting teenagers know the price you could pay for being a bully. Ryder and Slater are absolutely unstoppable in this sacred cult monument! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/26/25 Full Review Clara B A very good dark comedy subversion of the typical 80s highschool movies. While the problems in those stories seemed like life and death to the "teenage" characters, in this movie it decides to really make it so. (Early-Spoilers) In the first act of the movie, the leader of the titular "Heathers," Heather, is accidentally killed by Winona Ryder's Veronica after some bad advice and slide-of-hand of her situationship, Christian Slater's JD. From there, the movie follows Veronica dealing with the situation, and the spiralling fallout of her and JD's actions, with all the attitudes of an angsty teen. While Slater gives a somewhat weaker performance, the acting by the rest of the cast is excellently done. Slater and Ryder have great onscreen chemistry, even as their relationship evolves and changes over the course of the film. Because the movie kills off one of the titular characters in the first third of the movie, it subverts many of the expectations an audience might have had watching a teenage 80s movie, so the audience never knows what's going to happen next. It takes this opportunity and runs with it, letting the darker comedy shine through even brighter. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review Carlos I "Heathers" stands out as a stinging social satire that cleverly dissects the brutal dynamics of high school hierarchies with dark humor and cutting wit. Its dream-like qualities, from the surreal dialogue to the vividly stylized aesthetics, create an unsettling yet captivating atmosphere that draws viewers into its twisted world. These elements not only critique the societal pressures of adolescence but also establish it as a unique cult favorite that resonates with audiences long after the credits roll. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/29/25 Full Review Manfred W I thought it would be humorous, but it just turned out to be a dark and depressing. murder/kill for no reason movie..
