The Mississippi story mirrors the American story.

In fact, Mississippi was a great American battleground of freedom and democracy in both the 19th and 20th centuries. For example, our state’s history, like America’s itself, includes Indian Removal to make way for slavery and the dominance of cotton in an agrarian society. This slavery question led to the Civil War, followed by Reconstruction, the Jim Crow Era, Prohibition, the Great Depression, World War II, and the Civil Rights Movement. Mississippi played a major role in all these periods of American history.

The state’s history also includes overcoming natural disasters, advances in technology, and contributions to art, literature, and music. Mississippi’s impact on American history and culture is disproportionate to its small size.

As one of the most religious states in America, religion is a thread that weaves through the entirety of Mississippi history. The state also ranks high for kindness and generosity, which is not surprising since it is known as the “Hospitality State.” In Mississippi, we celebrate our accomplishments. We also acknowledge that we have not always lived up to our ideals, but together we continue to strive for a more perfect union.
