- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2018I recently decided to install ‘smart home’ lighting and other devices in my home, and after some research I decided to give the Philips Hue system a try. I also have quite a few basic non-smart LED bulbs in my home.
I’m very happy with the Hue system so far although it is going to take some time to fully understand all of the ways it can be varied and used. I use mine together with the Apple HomeKit system, and the integration with HomeKit has been automatic and without difficulty.
There is a huge difference in the price of individual bulbs depending on what they are capable of, beginning with basic LED bulbs that don’t offer the integration with the Hue system (remote operation and programming), and continuing to bulbs that are a part of the Hue system and have features including full color control (most expensive).
The Philips Hue system requires the use of a Hue hub connected to your home Wi-Fi system to connect and control Hue specific bulbs and accessories, and there are starter kits to obtain the hub together with two or four bulbs.
Initially it took some time to understand the differences between the various Philips Hue bulbs, so here is a quick intro. There are five basic Philips LED bulb types (both Hue and non-Hue bulbs). ALL ARE 60W equivalent, Dimmable, E26 type (standard light bulb):
- 1. (NOT Hue) 800 lumen Warm 2700K
- 2. (NOT Hue) 800 lumen Daylight 5000K
- 3. Hue 840 lumen Warm 2700K
- 4. Hue 800 lumen White ambiance 2200-6500K
- 5. Hue 800 lumen White and color ambiance 2000-6500K plus ’16 million’ colors
All of the bulbs above use approximately 9-10 watts at maximum brightness
There is a huge difference in prices for the 5 types listed above, from about 2-3 dollars per bulb (1 & 2 above), to 10 per bulb (3 above), 20 per bulb (4 above), and finally 40 per bulb for all the bells and whistles (5 above).
I quickly learned that if I don’t need to vary the ‘warmness’ of the light in a certain room or area, then all I need is the basic LED bulb, either warm or daylight, and it doesn’t necessarily need to be a Hue bulb if I don’t need to control the bulbs from an App. The brightness can always be controlled from a LED compatible wall mounted dimmer switch or other smart home dimmer that can integrate into the smart home system.
If I want lighting in a certain area or room to have the flexibility to change from warm white to bright daylight, in addition to dimming, then the White ambiance style Hue bulb works great.
Finally, if I want to add special effects, varying colors and everything imaginable about the lighting, then the White and color ambiance bulbs give that capability.
Starter Kits
I started with this basic kit, which includes four of the White ambience bulbs plus the hub:
Hue Starter Kit 4 x 800 lumen White ambiance 2200-6500K plus hub
Other starter kits are available, either with two or four basic white Hue bulbs, or with two of the White and color ambiance bulbs.
Lightstrips
I’ve installed the Hue lightstrips under the counters in our kitchen, and they are terrific. I've also installed them under the sides of the bed in our bedroom, to provide night and ambience lighting:
Hue LightStrip 1600 lumen White and color ambiance 2000-6500K plus ’16 million’ colors
The lightstrips have turned out to be one of the more enjoyable parts of the system and are very easy to install.
Accessories and Control Options
All of the Hue products can be controlled using the App, and there is a huge amount of flexibility available in how the lights are programmed. They can be organized by room or in other ways, and controlled in groups or separately.
Hue bulbs are not intended to be used with a wall mounted dimmer switch unless the dimmer is specifically intended to be used with the Hue system. Once a light is turned off using the wall switch, then it can’t be turned back on using the Hue controls (power needs to be supplied to the bulb at all times in order for the bulb to be controllable by the Hue system, even if the bulb is turned off. This is not intuitive at first and is a part of why installing these kinds of bulbs in a home requires considerable thought about how you will use them and what is most convenient for any particular situation).
The Hue dimmer switch / remote is a handy accessory to have, if you want to be able to control lights without using the App:
Hue Smart Dimmer Switch
Hue Smart Dimmer Switch plus 1 800 lumen White ambience 220-6500K
I have two of these dimmer switches and use one to control the undercounter lights in our kitchen. For those particular lights it is the only way they can be controlled all at the same time since they plug into different outlets and the outlets are not controlled by any wall switches.
There is also a ‘tap switch’ available, and a motion sensor. I have not tried either of those products yet.
There is a lot more that could be said about this Hue system but my intention here is only to give a quick introduction to the types of lighting available and some of the ways in which they can be used.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2018Well everyone has pretty much said what I would say. Both are very much worth the money.
As soon as I had the Echo setup which was actually pretty quick, I set up my 1st smart light bulb and IMMEDIATELY ordered four more! And will continue to automate my house. I love that lamps that once could not be dimmed can be now. The one by the bed was always too bright, now with these bulbs I'm able to dim them via the Alexa app on my phone. As soon as you add ONE bulb you're going to see ALL the places that this technology can be used. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!
As for the Echo Plus, love it too. Good quality sound when listening to music or TV shows (attached to the iPad via bluetooth). I have a JBL Flip 4 speaker and I compare the two and they are very close, although perhaps the JBL speaker has better bass. But I love that the Plus has the built in Zeebee hub to manage all the smart things in the house and now when buying other things I will make sure they work with the Echo.
A little tip...spend some time and write up a all the different commands you can give Alexa as there's no way you'll be able to remember them all. Plus if you sit down with Word and browse all the sites that have examples of what to try with Alexa, copy and paste them in the word doc and the next thing you'll know is you'll have a FOUR page document of all sorts of commands. Which of course will lead to other ones that you'll try. It's fun. Many times when my wife and I are preparing meals we'll play Who want to be a Millionaire , or Jeopardy, or....on and on...so many things to do.
Yeah..get this..totally worth it. Or...you could get the echo spot with is $20, buy the JBL Flip 4 speaker, $105, and a bridge for the Philips lights, $45....uh oh...now you've spent more than you would have just buying this package and you still wouldn't have the light bulb!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2018Edit:
Of late, I was having issues between HomeKit and my Hue hub/bulbs, I tried a lot of things router tweaks etc. I finally stumbled on a post about its control channels. I went to the Hue app and changed its control channel for my bulbs to 25 and now I have great happy results out of HomeKit and Siri.
If your having issues try changing the channel, I wish I had done it sooner and alleviated some of my wifi issues. Its a fairly painless process, but you need to follow the directions in the Hue app.
Original:
I started a couple months ago swapping my bulbs to hue and purchased a single kit w/ 4 bulbs and a hub then an additional 4 bulbs.
I had previously held out as I thought the price wouldn't be worth the usefulness. I had a few smart switches over the years and saw no need to replace them. . Boy I was wrongI am so happy to be able to use HomeKit and scenes with the hue. Now my lights fade in at wake up time and a few exterior lights fade out for the evening. It was funny to hear the wife tell me we needed a few more the other evening. She had some other lights she wanted to be able to control. Major plus for this geeky husband and father.
This time I purchase 2 additional sets of bulbs from Amazon. Amazons price point was $10 less than local, when I purchased this set of bulbs. A definite plus.
I did have one bulb that was evidently bad, as it started slowly not being reachable, then started flickering on and off. Finally it wouldn't even come on.
Philips has a good warranty on the lights and we are in contact with them to get a replacement out to us. I will certainly purchase more lights as the need arises.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent all-purpose bulb - the unsung hero of the smart home
I have fully decked out my house with a variety of Philips Hue bulbs. These are the "basic" bulbs as they don't change colour. The colour changing ones are cool, but in reality for most of the house I just need a light that turns on/off. I have these in the hallways, in the entry ways, outside at the front and back door and the garage.
For me, the top 3 pros for these bulbs are:
1. Price. Four of these babies are the same price as ONE full colour bulb.
2. Fully-functional with Hue hub and Alexa.
3. Functions more like a regular light. If you NEED the light on without an app or Alexa, you can flip the switch off and on and the light bulbs will turn on. The ambient/colour bulbs won't turn on. I found this out on my first install when I had one white bulb in my 3 bulb fixture and ambient bulbs didn't turned on. You need this capability in hallways more than a light rotating through the colours of the rainbow :)
These bulbs are great value as they provide more functionality than a standard bulb but without additional accessories. The dimming ability is amazing and I use it more than I thought I would, but there are so many things I didn't know I could have! Through the Hue app, I have my garage lights turn on at sunset and off at sunrise. Using the Hue switch, my pull-cord light fixtures in the basement will now turn on/off all at once - or separately if I use Alexa or the Hue app. The light at the backdoor is geofenced with my phone and turns on when I arrive home after dark.

Me encantó!
Previamente tenía un juego de luces que compré en conjunto con el bridge de Hue Phiips, y fué mucho más sencillo hacer la instalación. Y ahora que Alexa me ayuda a controlar las luces, estamos encantados en casa.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fácil configuración
