Population
According to the 2005 census, Iran's population is over 67,017,860. The area of the country is 1,648,195 square km while on average about 37 persons live per square km.
The most populated province of the country is Tehran with some 346 persons living per square km, while Semnan is the least populated area with some 5 persons living per square km.
The sample census in 2001 suggests that Iran's population is currently over 64 million. Tehran, Mashhad, Isfahan, Shiraz, Tabriz, Rasht, Ahwaz, and Kermanshah are among the most populated provinces of the country.

Some 38.3 percent of the total population of the country lives in rural and 61.3 percent in urban areas. The remaining 1.4 percent are immigrants.

Age Group
Iran has the youngest population in the world. Over 40 percent of the population is below the age of 15 while some 4.37 percent are above 65. The remaining portion, that is 55.62 percent of the population, is aged 15 to 65. A further breakdown reveals that some 19.44 percent of the population is aged 15 to 24 and some 32.79 percent is aged 25 to 46.

Migration
According to the nose count conducted in 1996, some 8.7 million citizens of the republic migrated from their cities and villages to other parts of the country between 1986 and 1996. Some 36.58 percent of the said figure migrated to areas nearby their original place of residence while others migrated to more remote areas of the country. Most of the migrants have settled in the provinces of Tehran, Isfahan, Khuzestan, and Qom. The highest number of migrants is from the provinces of East Azarbaijan, Kermanshah, Lorestan, and Ardabil. Currently, some 2.8 million foreign immigrants also live in Iran.

Communications


Post
Currently a variety of domestic and international postal services are offered in the country. In 1997, the country's postal system handled some 12 million letters and parcels with a foreign origin, 7 million letters and parcels with a foreign destination as well as 25 million domestic letters and parcels.
The post services are carried out by the government (as one of the companies under supervision of the Ministry of Communication and Information) and private sectors in Iran. The post system of Iran is linked to almost all points of the world. The post offices are indicated by a yellow signboard everywhere in the country. The post service is available in three forms of airmail, Pishtaz (similar to DHL) and Normal.
All the post tariffs are the same for Iranians and foreigners and paid in Rials. In order to boost up the process of postal services, Postal Areas have been planned in Iran. The working hours of these branches are from 8 A.M. to 6 P.M.

Telecommunications
The telecommunications industry of the country has been progressing significantly in recent years. Currently, all telecommunication links are digital. Most rural areas of the country are connected to the nationwide telecom network. Cellular phones cover almost all the points in the country; and the fiber-optic network linking Asia to Europe passes through Iran.
Almost all governmental and private organizations in the country are benefiting from an advanced telecommunication system; and all domestic and international calls are digitally achieved.
Iran Telecommunication Company in the Ministry of Communication and Information is governmental and provides all communicative services such as telephone, telegraph, telex, fax, e-mail and Internet to the Iranians and foreigners. In addition to the representatives of Iran Telecommunication Company, the private sector also provides
these services in all provinces of the country. This company and all its representatives in the country work around the clock and give special discount to night communications. All the city and intercity communications are through telephone booths and fixed telephones which use either cards or coins.

Information & News

Radio & Television
State Radio and Television in Iran is run by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) with seven TV channels broadcasting at a national level while two networks broadcasting for both inside and outside Iran. Each province has its own radio and TV network. "Radio Iran" programs are transmitted all over the country. The network has over 1150 stations and some 260 transmitters.
As mentioned above, the Iranian T .V. provides the programs, information, and news through seven interior and two international channels. Every day, the English and Arabic News are broadcasted on channel 4 at 11 P.M. and 1:45 P.M. respectively.

Press Network

There has been a significant growth in the number of high-quality newspapers, magazines and periodicals in recent years. Currently, all sorts of specialized magazines are printed throughout the country on regular basis. The usage of electronic media is on the rise.
In Iran, after the national radio and television, the press has the highest share in informative service. Almost all Iranian newspapers are accessible on the Internet. The morning dailies (Iran News, Tehran Times, Iran Daily, Keyhan International in English and Alvefagh in Arabic) are among the most important newspapers of Iran.
