When PCs poop out, radio computer guru Kim Komando gets the call

She’s pretty, witty and a whiz at solving computer woes; no wonder male callers, sometimes propose marriage to radio host Kim Komando (and that is her real name). But the self-styled “digital goddess,” whose Phoenix-based Kim Komando Computer Show airs on 361 stations around the U.S., usually takes more pressing calls—such as how to deal with a Net-addicted spouse or pick a printer. “You never know what’s coming,” says Komando, 35.

A former computer sales manager, Komando (on the Web at http://www.komando.com) had just begun moonlighting on local radio when her fiancé died in a plane crash in 1992. Shaken, she threw herself into her new calling. But she has a secret. “I don’t have a computer in my home,” she admits. “I have three pinball machines—they’re awesome.”

Should couples read each other’s e-mail?

Their stories “give the rest of us inspiration,” says site founder Andrew Schorr, 49, a medical-video producer who has chronic lymphocytic leukemia. To educate people, says Angie Dickinson, who talked about her sister’s struggle with Alzheimer’s, “I do whatever I can.”
