Offloaded at Motukea Wharf from the Australian Defence Vessel Reliant, the bomber will be reassembled and displayed at the PNG National Museum and Art Gallery.

The aircraft, which flew with the United States Air Force in the Pacific during World War II, was assigned to American pilot Second Lieutenant Charles Anderson. In April 1944, during a mission return flight, the aircraft was forced to crash-land near Amaiamon village in Madang Province due to poor weather. Both Lt. It was formally returned to PNG in 1996 to mark the RAAF’s 75th anniversary and PNG’s 25th year of Independence, but remained displayed at the RAAF Amberley Heritage Centre—until now.

Paul Ashbey, Deputy Director of the Australian Defence Force Heritage Fleet, said this delivery symbolizes the long-standing bond between Australia and PNG. “This aircraft belongs here. He questioned the symbolism of bestowing such honours amid France’s continued resistance to New Caledonia’s independence.

He said the Marape government must remember PNG’s long-standing support for Melanesian solidarity, citing the first Chan administration’s intervention in Vanuatu as an example of the country’s commitment to self-determination in the region.

Hon. Meanwhile, Northern Province Governor Gary Juffa has strongly criticized the initiative, urging both the national government and his provincial counterpart to halt what he calls an unprecedented and risky industrial experiment.

Also read

PNG to Host MSG Prime Minister's Cup Football Tournament in November

Staff Reporterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14166208637710928797[email protected]0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3356794033718079669.post-52716458726729886422025-06-08T20:33:00.001+10:002025-06-08T20:33:24.245+10:00PNG to Host MSG Prime Minister's Cup Football Tournament in November
Papua New Guinea has been confirmed as the host nation for the 4th Edition of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Prime Minister’s Cup Football Tournament for men, and the inaugural women’s edition, to be held from 10–22 November in Port Moresby.

The agreement was finalized during the MSG Sports Ministers' meeting held in Suva, Fiji, where Minister Assisting the Prime Minister in Sports, Sam Basil Junior, signed the Host Agreement in the presence of fellow ministers, senior officials, and MSG Sports Committee members.

PNG to Host MSG Prime Minister's Cup Football Tournament in November [Photo supplied]

The PNG Sports Foundation CEO, Micah James, played a crucial role in preparing the agenda ahead of the Ministerial meeting, following a successful session by senior sports officials from MSG member countries.

Minister Basil expressed strong confidence that PNG is prepared to lead and deliver a successful tournament, noting that planning will begin immediately with support from MSG member states.

He told the meeting that the Local Organizing Committee would be tasked to coordinate with service providers and stakeholders to prepare the necessary logistics and infrastructure.

The tournament dates fall within the official FIFA window and are recognized under the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) framework as a tier one competition, ensuring a high standard of play.

Minister Basil also emphasized the unifying role of sports in strengthening ties among PNG, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, and FLNKS, thanking his counterparts for their continued support of PNG’s hosting bid.

Also read

Redcliffe Dolphins Storm Past PNG Hunters with Nine-Try Blitz
Staff Reporterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14166208637710928797[email protected]0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3356794033718079669.post-51265148570350631032025-06-08T20:22:00.003+10:002025-06-08T20:22:53.695+10:00Redcliffe Dolphins Storm Past PNG Hunters with Nine-Try Blitz
The PNG SP Hunters were handed a heavy 50-16 loss by the Redcliffe Dolphins during Round 12 of the QRL Hostplus Cup, in front of their home crowd at Santos National Football Stadium. The incident, which reportedly occurred last Tuesday, has triggered a wave of national outrage and condemnation against the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary.

Initial reports revealed that the woman was arrested during a police operation and placed in a cell where three officers—two regular police and one auxiliary member—allegedly took turns sexually assaulting her overnight. The officers were reportedly under the supervision of their Station Commander, who failed to intervene and has since been arrested.

Police Commissioner David Manning

Police Commissioner David Manning confirmed the arrests of three suspects and stated that a fourth suspect, the auxiliary officer, remains on the run. "The manhunt for the auxiliary member allegedly involved in the rape of a woman at the Saraga Police Post is still underway," Manning said, adding that police were conducting door-to-door searches in heavily populated settlement areas to locate and arrest him.

The Commissioner also revealed shocking findings from an internal inquiry now led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Internal Affairs. One of the arrested suspects, identified as Karaio, was convicted in 2012 and sentenced to over 14 years in prison. However, he was inexplicably out of custody and had been operating as a police officer. “This is a clear and disgraceful dereliction of duty from Commissioned Officers who owed our public better,” Manning said.

He further criticised the failures of the supervising officers at the time—including the then Metropolitan Superintendent and Divisional Commander—who failed to dismiss Karaio from the force or ensure that he served his sentence. Manning confirmed that under new disciplinary measures, those responsible for this lapse are now being held accountable and face arrest or disciplinary action.

Assistant Commissioner Benjamin Turi ordered the immediate arrest of the Station Commander who oversaw the accused officers, and Operations Chief Inspector Tobby Hamago executed the order. ACP Turi also ordered the closure of the Saraga Police Post and the removal of the vehicle used in the crime.

Meanwhile, Moresby South MP and Housing Minister Justin Tkatchenko has demanded the termination of all officers involved. “How can law enforcement be trusted when its officers behave like criminals?” he said, calling for the incident to serve as a wake-up call to clean up the police force and restore public trust.

Commissioner Manning also warned the public to avoid false information being circulated on social media, urging citizens to rely on verified updates. He reiterated the Constabulary’s zero-tolerance stance against violence, especially toward women, and pledged a full, independent investigation into the incident and all systemic failures that led to it.

Also read

Foreign Visitors to Pay Green Fee in PNG for Climate Action
Staff Reporterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14166208637710928797[email protected]0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3356794033718079669.post-42261371564996582052025-06-08T19:53:00.003+10:002025-06-08T19:53:42.317+10:00 Foreign Visitors to Pay Green Fee in PNG for Climate Action
A K50 Green Fee will now be charged to foreign passport holders departing from Papua New Guinea as part of a new initiative to support national climate efforts. The move, which will take effect in July, aims to deepen ties and expand opportunities for PNG citizens seeking seasonal employment or short-term visits.

New Zealand High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, His Excellency Mr. Peter Zwart, confirmed that PNG nationals applying for a Visitor Visa will now be eligible for multi-entry access. “This allows Papua New Guineans to travel in and out of New Zealand multiple times within a 24-month period,” he said. The initiative will run as a 12-month trial to gauge its effectiveness and future viability.

Further simplifying the process, Mr. Zwart announced that Papua New Guineans who hold valid Australian visitor, student, work, or family visas can travel to New Zealand using only an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). The initiative signals a significant step forward in PNG’s digital transformation strategy.

The workshop, which brought together delegates from nearly 40 countries, was attended by PNG’s Deputy Secretary for the Department of ICT, Mr. Russell Woruba. The event explored how AI can be a driver of national development, closely aligning with the country’s High-Level AI Strategy under the PNG Digital Government Act of 2022.

Papua New Guinea Deepens AI Partnership with China Following Tsinghua Workshop [Photo by DICT]

China’s thriving AI sector, centered in Beijing, provided a compelling model for PNG’s learning and adaptation. With over 2,400 AI enterprises and 120 large language models, the Chinese ecosystem reflects four major waves of technological growth—from early knowledge-based development to today's innovation-driven commercialization.

The current fourth wave, in particular, impressed delegates with its focus on research-to-industry transition. Universities are being transformed into innovation hubs, generating startups and practical AI solutions such as TrackAI, which is used to improve access to inclusive healthcare services.

During the sessions, participants examined how AI can enhance sustainable growth across sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and education through adaptive technologies and data analytics. For PNG, the discussions underscored the need to establish an innovation cluster model that encourages local patent creation and supports homegrown tech ventures.

The workshop outcomes also align with the broader goals of the Pacific ICT Minister’s Dialogue. PNG remains committed to the Lagatoi Declaration, endorsed at the last Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting, which promotes regional innovation and the use of appropriate technologies to solve pressing challenges.

Looking ahead, PNG may seek partnerships with institutions such as Tsinghua University and explore innovative financing options through mechanisms like the UN’s Global Fund on AI. These collaborations aim to bridge capacity gaps, deliver customized AI solutions, and position Papua New Guinea as a digital leader in the Pacific as it marks 50 years of independence.

Also read

PNG Government Cuts GST and Raises Income Tax Threshold
Staff Reporterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14166208637710928797[email protected]0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3356794033718079669.post-47945490442585004502025-06-02T14:31:00.000+10:002025-06-02T14:31:01.716+10:00PNG Government Cuts GST and Raises Income Tax Threshold
PNG Prime Minister James Marape says the removal of GST on 13 essential household items demonstrates his Government’s strong commitment to easing the cost of living for families across Papua New Guinea.

PNG Prime Minister James Marape

The GST zero-rating came into effect on June 1 and will continue until June 30, 2026.
