BALTIMORE, MD. (Friday, January 18, 2008) -

Former Tacoma Tide midfielder was drafted with the 5th pick of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft. O’Brien, a Generation adidas player from the University of California-Santa Barbara, was a NSCAA All-American Third Team member in 2007 after registering seven goals and 11 assists in 21 games. The most widely recruited transfer player in the nation in 2006, he came to UCSB after a very successful freshman campaign at the University of San Diego. As a member of FC United from 2002-07 he amassed 70 goals and 59 assists during his six years with the club, leading them to a regional championship and a national title match in 2004.

Tide's Season Ends in Controversy
Tacoma Tide 1 - 4 Fresno Fuego - OVERTIME

The Tacoma Tide season ended with undoubted frustration Friday night in Fresno California. The players each played their hearts out and in the end things were taken a little bit out of their hands. The final score was 4 to 1 in favor of the host team, the Fresno Fuego. The Fuego played an excellent game. A combination of skill, speed, and organization, the Fuego proved to be a team to reckon with through out these PDL playoffs. In the 23rd minute, the fast paced open to the match yielded a goal for Amaury Nunes. Tide chances were few in the first half. They had a few good opportunities on free kicks and long shots alike. Ciaran O’Brien picked up a questionable yellow card, and the game began to fade out of the hands of the match referee.

Tide And Sounders Put On Show To Remember
Tacoma Tide 2 - 2 Seattle Sounders

The Puget Sound’s top two teams put on an excellent show Saturday night in front of 1,000 fans packed into Curtis High School Stadium in Tacoma. The final score was a tie, but for the Tacoma Tide, and any Puget Sound soccer fan, it was much more than that. The Tacoma Tide earned a tie against a professional soccer team of the highest class. The Tide earned respect, and the Tide certainly earned a few fans Saturday night as they scored goals, defended, and excited.

From the initial whistle there was no question that the younger, more inexperienced PDL players were in no way afraid of the Sounders. The Tide players came out flying at the Sounders defense generating chances. Meanwhile, at the back, the defense was holding up strongly. The Tide’s aggressiveness paid off in the 23rd minute when Machael David made a surging run without the ball, down the center of the pitch. Ciaran O’Brien, who would make countless nice passes on the night, picked out his teammate with a precise ball and David was in 1 on 1 with the keeper. David made a touch to evade goalkeeper, Ben Dragavon, and Dragavon was forced to pull him down. Penalty kick for the Tide! Ciaran O’Brien shook off memories of last week’s cross bar penalty miss and knocked this shot into the right corner. The Tide had thrown the first blow in this Puget Sound clash, but it wouldn’t be their last.
