Our History

Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital, (BMSH), was initially established as a nursing home for senior civil servants in March 1925. It was later upgraded to a General Hospital, and is presently a Specialist Health Institution, duly accredited by the health regulatory organs of the Federal Ministry of Health.

The Hospital is named in honour of the Pioneer Surgeon and Head Consultant, Dr. Eldred Curwen Russel Braithwaite (MBBS, MRCS, D.Ph), an Australian national. It was previously known as Braithwaite Memorial Hospital, or BMH, up until it attained its Specialist status.

BMSH is the flagship facility of the Rivers State health care system and is one of the largest hospitals in the Niger Delta. The Hospital offers extensive and diverse health care services that include Family Medicine featuring renowned consultants, a fully-functional Radiology Department with modern imaging facilities attending to more patients than any other in the region, and BMSH Surgical Department featuring the most modern Modular Theatre in the country, providing innovative technology and world-class surgeons. There is also an ultra-modern Laboratory and a highly efficient Obstetrics Department that is probably the busiest in the region.

BMSH has a reputation as one of Nigeria's leading health care systems and is supported by a distinguished medical staff of about 731 professionals led by the Medical Director,Dr. (Mrs) O. Y. Ijeruh. In fact, the vast majority of physicians are board certified or board qualified in their specialties and have been trained at many of the world's finest medical schools and hospitals. Because of its distinguished medical staff and services, Memorial draws patients from South-South Nigeria and beyond.

The activities and services rendered by the Hospital are under the general supervision of the Rivers State Hospitals Management Board.
