Abstract: A method is disclosed of providing a fuel efficient regeneration of an exhaust after-treatment (AT) system that includes a lean oxides of nitrogen (NOX) trap (LNT) and a selective catalytic reduction filter (SCRF) positioned downstream of the LNT. The method includes regulating a selectable position valve. The valve permits a first gas flow portion to pass through the LNT and diverts a remaining second portion of exhaust gas flow from a first passage connecting an engine and the AT system to a second exhaust passage to thereby bypass the LNT. The method also includes regulating a first device to inject fuel into the first portion of the exhaust gas flow. The injection of fuel in to the first portion of the exhaust gas flow provides fuel efficient regeneration of the LNT and promotes NOX conversion and ammonia (NH3) formation in the LNT. A system employing the method is also disclosed.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine for a hybrid vehicle includes an engine block, a flywheel, and a grounding clutch coupled to the block. The block defines a bore along a first longitudinal axis. The flywheel is rotatable about the axis and includes a spline. The spline has a first tooth and a second tooth spaced apart from the first tooth to define a gap therebetween. The clutch is configured for preventing rotation of the flywheel about the first axis and includes a locking pin. The pin is transitionable between a locked position in which the pin is disposed within the gap and abuts the first and second teeth such that the flywheel does not rotate, and an unlocked position in which the pin does not abut the first and second teeth such that the flywheel rotates. A hybrid vehicle is also disclosed.

Abstract: A vehicle includes an engine, drive wheels, a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and a controller. The CVT includes an input member connected to the engine, an output member delivering output torque to the wheels, and a variator assembly connecting the input and output members. The controller determines, via a method, an input and output speed of the variator assembly, converts the output speed to an equivalent input speed using a calibrated variator speed ratio, and calculates a gross slip of the variator assembly using the input and equivalent input speeds. A gross slip flag is set only when the gross slip exceeds a calibrated slip value for a predetermined duration. A CVT assembly includes the controller, input and output members, and variator assembly. The variator assembly may include drive and driven pulleys, a drive mechanism connecting the pulleys, and an actuator applying a clamping force to one of the pulleys.

Abstract: A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes a desired turbine power module and an engine actuator module. The desired turbine power module determines a desired amount of power at a turbine of a torque converter based on an accelerator pedal position and a vehicle speed. The torque converter transfers torque from an engine to a driveline and includes an impeller and the turbine. The impeller is connected to a crankshaft of the engine. The turbine is connected to a transmission in the driveline and is at least one of hydraulically coupled and mechanically coupled to the impeller. The engine actuator module controls an actuator of the engine based on the desired turbine power.

Abstract: A method for controlling a hybrid vehicle includes the following: (a) receiving route data regarding a desired trip; (b) determining a load distribution along the desired trip based on the route data; (c) determining a load threshold based on the load distribution along the desired trip; (d) determining a charge depleting operating threshold based on a state of charge of the energy storage device; (e) commanding the powertrain to shift from a charge-depleting mode to a charge-sustaining mode when a load of the hybrid vehicle is equal to or greater than the load threshold; and (f) commanding the powertrain to shift from the charge-sustaining mode to the charge-depleting mode when the hybrid vehicle has traveled a distance that is greater than or equal to the charge-depleting operating threshold since the powertrain shifted from the charge-depleting mode to the charge-sustaining mode.
