Biography
TRAINING: You can see my average day of training on my UFC training blog, on UFC.com, coming soon.
When and why did you start training for fighting? 16 years old, in my backyard. I was challenged to a sparring match against a friend who was considerable smaller than I was. After being spin kicked in the solar-plexus and then eventually choked with a triangle choke, I decided that the best thing for a street fighter to do was learn the disciplines of martial arts that would make me be able to compete in this new sport.
What ranks and titles have you held? Grapplers Quest Champ 2003-2006, Icon Sport Middleweight Champ, Icon Sport Welterweight Champ, Superbrawl Champ, BJJ Black Belt under Fabricio Werdum, TUF 14 coach
Do you have any heroes? Heroes is a broad term. I think that anyone who has the courage to express themselves in their own way is my hero.
What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It's what I was born to do. I don't have the skill set to do any other job - I can only give my body for the entertainment of the masses.
Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? I went to community college, and didn't earn any degree. I'm not proud of either of those statements, but I don't mind that this is printed. I prefer self-education.
What was your job before you started fighting? I worked in a junkyard, stripping down old wrecked cars and putting them on other, slightly newer wrecked cars.
Specific accomplishments in amateur competition? At 17 I fought my first pro fight, instead of taking my date to the prom. Never had an amateur career.
Specific accomplishments in pro competition? I beat people up.
Ranks in any martial arts styles: Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu, no belt in wrestling, and I still have my yellow belt from Tae Kwon Do when I was 11.
Favorite grappling technique: RNC
Favorite Striking technique: Left body kick
