Thanks for visiting my website. Here you will find details and information about my experiences during the Second World War 1939-1945. There is also a photo gallery, a list of useful follow-up links, my blog and a guestbook. I have also added a section on how to research your family members who were in the forces during the second world war and who were imprisoned at various camps in many different countries.

You can follow the link on the left to my 'memoirs'. They were writen
over the course of a couple of weeks at the beginning of 2008. My
great-grandaughter who lives in Canada was involved in a school project
where the children were asked if any of their family had experiences to
share of the Second World War. The results of our 'chats' are now
available for all to read.

On 15 August 1945, the war in the Pacific finally came to an end - VJ
Day. To celebrate the 65th anniversary, there will be a number of events
and activities across the UK.
London
The MoD are expected to arrange a commemorative service at the Cenotaph in London. Details yet to be provided.
National Memorial Arboretum
The Malayan Volunteers Group will hold a service of commemoration at 2.00pm. More details. Fort Nelson (Royal Armouries), near Portsmouth
Between 10.00am and 5.00pm, there will be gun firings and presentations.
The Royal British Legion
We will include VJ Day in our Poppy Press newsletter sent to supporters
and available online and it will feature in this year's Annual Festival
of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on 13 November.
VJ DAY
August 14th - Japan surrenders
August 15th - Surrender announced to the world
September 2 - Ceremony and formal signing of surrender
VJ Day marks the end of WWII, and the cessation of fighting against
Japan. It is called "Victory In Japan Day or "Victory Over Japan Day".
The confusion over three dates:
There is some confusion over what date is V-J Day. You can consider any (or
all) of three dates as V-J Day. President Harry S. Truman caused some of
this confusion........
On August 14, 1945, the Japanese government cabled to the U.S. their surrender.
This is the date of most modern observances.
On August 15, 1945, news of the surrender was announced to the world. This
sparked spontaneous celebrations over the final ending of World War II.
On September 2, 1945, a formal surrender ceremony was held in Tokyo Bay aboard
the USS Missouri. At the time, President Truman declared September 2 to be
VJ Day.
As we approach VJ day I have compiled a list of websites that give research information on the experiences of those who experienced being a Prisoner Of War in Japan. This information will help in understanding why it is so important to have official recognition of VJ Day. Recognition for those veterans still alive, now only a few hundred in number, and more importantly for the memory of those who are not.
