World Anaesthesia Day recognises one of the most important events in the history of Medicine, the first successful demonstration of ether anaesthesia on October 16, 1846 at the Massachusetts General Hospital, home of the Harvard School of Medicine. As the professional body for anaesthesia in the UK and Ireland the AAGBI is commemorating World Anaesthesia Day. The AAGBI represents and supports the medical and political views of 11,000 anaesthetists in the UK, Ireland and internationally. We have a broad constitution that enables us to promote and advance education, safety and research in anaesthesia, as well as the professional aspects of the speciality and the welfare of individual anaesthetists.
