New Additions to the UN Audiovisual Library of International Law

The Codification Division of the UN Office of Legal Affairs recently added new materials to the UN Audiovisual Library of International Law website. They include an introductory note by Gay McDougall on the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, 1965; and an introductory note by Surya P. Subedi on the Declaration on the Right to Development, 1986.

The Codification Division of the UN Office of Legal Affairs recently added new materials to the UN Audiovisual Library of International Law website. They include an introductory note by Eileen Denza on the Draft Articles on the Status of the Diplomatic Courier and the Diplomatic Bag Not Accompanied by Diplomatic Courier, 1989; and an introductory note by Kevin Riordan on the International Convention against the Recruitment, Use, Financing and Training of Mercenaries, 1989.

The Codification Division of the UN Office of Legal Affairs recently added new materials to the UN Audiovisual Library of International Law website. They include a lecture given by Michael W. Lodge on “The Legal Regime for the Deep Seabed under Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea”; an introductory note by Mónica Pinto on the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of 1966; and an introductory note by Bakhtiyar Tuzmukhamedov on the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction of 1972. The Codification Division of the UN Office of Legal Affairs recently added new materials to the UN Audiovisual Library of International Law website. They include a lecture given by Steven Hill on “Legal Aspects of the Work of NATO”; a lecture by Donald M. McRae on “Varieties of International Dispute Settlement: From Litigation to Conciliation”; a lecture by Manuel Rama Montaldo on “Aspectos conceptuales e históricos del proceso de codificación y de desarrollo progresivo del derecho internacional en la Naciones Unidas, con especial referencia a la labor de la Comisión de Derecho Internacional”; and an introductory note by Hans Corell on Agreement between the United Nations and the Royal Government of Cambodia concerning the prosecution under Cambodian law of crimes committed during the period of Democratic Kampuchea, 2003.

Lecture by UN Legal Counsel Miguel de Serpa Soares

In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, the UN Office of Legal Affairs has posted a lecture by Miguel de Serpa Soares, Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel, entitled “Seventy-Five Years of International Law-making at the United Nations.” The lecture is available in English, French, and Spanish. Here's the idea:
This lecture outlines the extraordinary contribution of the United Nations to the development, codification and implementation of international law in branches ranging from the law of treaties to the legal principles governing the protection and preservation of the marine environment, and criminal responsibility for grave violations of international humanitarian law. It pays particular attention to the areas of international law where the work of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs, established in 1946, has directly contributed. The lecture concludes by looking ahead at the next twenty-five years and addresses some current and future issues where the United Nations can contribute to preserving and strengthening the international legal order.

They include: a lecture given by Karine Bannelier-Christakis on “Enjeux du principe de due diligence dans la prévention et la reaction aux cyber-attaques” and a lecture by Ivana Hrdličková on “Special Tribunal for Lebanon – A Tribunal of Many Firsts” in video and audio formats, accompanied by the related materials lists; as well as an introductory note by Jean Allain on the Slavery Convention, 1926, and the Protocol amending the Slavery Convention, 1953, and the Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery, the Slave Trade, and Institutions and Practices Similar to Slavery, 1956.

New Addition to the UN Audiovisual Library of International Law

The Codification Division of the UN Office of Legal Affairs recently added a lecture to the UN Audiovisual Library of International Law Podcast Channel. Due to current circumstances, the AVL team can post lectures only to the podcast channel and not the website. The lecture was given by Phoebe Okowa on “Protection of Natural Resources in Armed Conflict.”
