Visiting a Christian place of Worship
Visiting a place of worship is a key element of most RE syllabi. A visit can be fun and feed our sense of wonder. We have two slightly different modules to offer; the first is a gentle introduction to the things that the children will find in a Christian place of worship. The second module assumes some prior learning and focuses on what makes a cathedral different from a parish church.
What will I see in a place of Christian worship?
In this more general introductory module we take everyone round some of the special furnishings inside a church and demonstrate the part these furnishing play in our services. We look at what happens in a baptism, handle some of the artefacts used in worship and if there’s time we might dress someone up in some of the special vestments the priest wears in the Eucharist.
What makes a cathedral different?
This module differs from thechurch as a place of worship unit by emphasising the difference between an ordinary parish church and a cathedral.
We look at the Saxon crypt, the treasury, the choir stalls and the Cathedra – the bishop’s seat that gives the cathedral its name.
Art – stained glass windows tell stories
In early medieval times wall paintings and stained-glass windows were used to tell the great stories of the bible and, to help people to make personal connections with what they were seeing.
In this module we begin by showing a short video that explains how stained-glass windows are made. Then using PowerPoint, we imagine ourselves to be a mediaeval artist who has been commissioned to create a window depicting the parable of the ‘Good Samaritan’. We look first at the story as it unfolds. Then we see how one of the windows in the Cathedral captures the action of the parable.
Pilgrimage – Special journeys, holy places

History – Ripon Cathedral – Ripon People
This module begins with a visual presentation about the early history of the Cathedral. Then, having divide into smaller groups, each group is tasked with finding a particular memorial in the cathedral, learning about the person it commemorates, and then coming back to present what they have learned to the whole group.
