Born in 1973, Jeffrey R. Brown grew up in East Brunswick and continues to both work as well as reside there with his wife and son. Jeffrey began his legal career in 1998 as a law clerk to Superior Court Judge Vincent LeBlon when Judge LeBlon was assigned to the Middlesex County Family Court. After completing his one-year Family Court clerkship for Judge LeBlon, which was an invaluable learning experience, Jeffrey went on to practice divorce and family law at another East Brunswick law firm until 2002, when he established his own practice. Jeffrey’s practice has expanded over the years to include residential real estate closings, Municipal Court traffic violations, as well as consumer bankruptcy.

An active member of the Middlesex County Bar Association, Family Law Section, Jeffrey has served as a Matrimonial Early Settlement Panelist for the Middlesex County Family Court since 2006, which is an all-volunteer program designed to help divorcing couples settle their case prior to trial.

Jeffrey has completed the 40 hour Family Mediation Training course offered by the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education and is also pleased to offer divorce and family law mediation services in addition to more traditional divorce litigation.

In 2018, Jeffrey successfully represented the Respondent in the reported Appellate Division decision, Bermeo v. Bermeo. In its decision, the Appellate Division reaffirmed the long-standing principal that a party seeking an increase (or decrease) in alimony must first demonstrate a substantial change in circumstances rendering the original agreement unfair, unjust, or inequitable. The Appellate Division also noted that consensual divorce agreements, voluntarily entered into, should not be easily disturbed. Finally, the Appellate Division held that the trial court was not obligated, subsequent to the divorce, to conduct a marital lifestyle analysis when the parties’ voluntarily waived a marital lifestyle determination in their divorce agreement.

Divorce clients usually begin the process with a great deal of anxiety and uncertainty. Oftentimes, they may have received well-intentioned but inaccurate information from well-meaning friends or family members, or they may have received erroneous information on the internet.

Jeffrey’s approach is to try to provide a realistic roadmap of the process at the initial consultation and to provide the prospective client with some scenarios of what might be expected gong forward. Common questions to be addressed at an initial meeting usually include “Will I have to pay alimony and for how long?” “How much alimony am I entitled to receive?” “What bills should I be paying during the divorce?” “What will happen to our house?” “Should I move out of the house while the divorce is pending?” “How will our credit card debts be divided?”

Jeffrey understands that a divorce settlement agreement is often the most significant financial agreement a client will enter into in his or her lifetime. It is important that the client understand the ramifications and significance of that agreement, and, to that end, it is imperative that the client retain a New Jersey divorce attorney skilled and experienced in the practice of family law.

Divorce lawyering, at its best, involves helping people resolve seemingly intractable issues in a fair and even handed manner so that they can move on with their lives. It entails reminding clients that not every issue is worth fighting over, and that sometimes, in the world of divorce law, the cost of victory can be higher than the cost of defeat. The firm’s philosophy is that the goal in a divorce case is to end the marriage with the least amount of emotional and financial damage, and to carefully pick and choose which issues are worth fighting over.
