Baltimore, Monday, THE SUN SPORTS May 12, 1947 PAGE 18 Baltimore Americans Beat Kearny Celtics, 1-0, To Take Lewis Cup ADAMS BOOTS LONE POINT Len Lewandowski Stars On Defense For Victors New York, May 11 Special By winning. l-O, the Baltimore Americans captured the Lewis Cup of the American Soccer League competition from the Kearny Celtics this afternoon at Sterling Oval. Bronx. This was the second of a two-game series Baltimore won, 4-2, two weeks ago and since the trophy is awarded to the team scoring the most number of goals, the Amerks. with a 5-2 margin, took the cup to Baltimore for the first time in soccer history. Knight Passes To Adams After nine minutes of play in the opening half, Joe Adams. A's center forward, took a pass from Johnny Knight on the right wing and placed a hard shot into the Cel tics net for the only score oi tne day. But it was up to Len Lewandow ski. the victors' fullback, to save the Baltimore outfit from a possible tie when be booted the ball out of the goal after Americans' goalie, Gil Schuerholz, was drawn out of position. Scores Fourth Shutout Again in the closing minutes of the clash the big fullback averted a deadlock by positioning himself where he could break up an Irish assault. It was due largely to this kind of defensive play that the Americans, who finished third in the regular league race, were able to gain the finals in the Cup series. This was the Baltimorean's fourth shutout during the trophy playoffs, and in their six Karnes their net was pierced only three times. He won't be in the fight but he is likely to have a lot at stake in the main ten-round match that has Bobby Lee matched with Dorsey Lay, of Philadelphia. Rated Top Threat You see, Charley is one of the leading lights in his division. Bobby, another Baltimore boy, is rated as one of his chief threats. The point is this when Charlie tried to get by Lay, the Philadel-phian handed him a stiff lacing. So if Bobby can do better and shackle Lay, a lot of the aurora surrounding Millan's head will be dulled quite a bit. Of course, the task for Lee is not begun yet. Bobby has looked good in winning his last four starts in a row against such workmanlike boppers as Bernie Miller, Eddie Giosa, Pedro Firpo and Johnny Williams. But none of these worthies boast the standing that Lay possesses. Other Matches Listed . The first bout, which will have Frankie Rowe meeting . Charlie Hoyle at four rounds, will start at 8.45 o'clock. The other fours will send Billy Cofield against Jimmy Ricco and Maurice Nelson against Eddie Thomas. Two sixes will bring together Joe Gannon, of Washington, and Char ley Marshall in the semi-windup. while Walter Rowan will tangle Totals .35 9 9 27 8' Totals 34 7 8 27 10 Walbrook 4 0 1 0 1 0 0 0 Morrell 0 3 2 2 0 0 0 0 39 07 CARROLL'S Ab Colllns.2b, .... 3 Winter.ss.
