At least five people were killed and four "seriously injured" following an explosion in Spain's northern Asturias region, emergency services said Monday, adding that helicopters and ambulances were immediately mobilized to the scene in Degana.

The deceased were between the ages of 32 and 54 and all came from the neighboring Leon region, officials said.

Reports of missing workers were later revised to say that everyone was accounted for.

Authorities said they were first alerted to the incident around 9:30 am local time, and were told there was a "problem with a machine."

Sanchez thanks first responders

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez extended his "sincere condolences" to the families of the victims, wishing a "speedy recovery" to the injured.

"I would like to thank the emergency services who are working on the rescue operation," he wrote on social media site X.
