Five years after the original HomePod, Apple has finally deemed it time to release a successor. The second-generation HomePod breathes new life into the companyâs smart home aspirations, boasting a new processor and improved sound quality, along with a temperature and humidity sensor, simpler smart home automation, and support for Matterâthe standard that aims to make all smart home devices interoperable.Â
However, this smart speaker is nearly as expensive as the original. Sure, itâs $50 less, but it still costs $299. At least thereâs still the HomePod Mini for $99. If the price doesnât deter you, the second-generation HomePod is available for preorder and officially hits shelves on February 3.Â
Wrapped in mesh fabric with a backlit touch surface on top, the new HomePod looks identical to its predecessor. Thereâs a new color option thoughâmidnight, in addition to the traditional white. Youâll get a color-matched woven power cable, which is always a nice touch.
The more notable improvements are on the inside. The new HomePod is powered by an S7 processor for computational audioâyep, the same one inside the Apple Watch Series 7âwhich is supposedly a massive upgrade from the A8 chip on the original. When itâs combined with the high-excursion woofer, internal bass-EQ mic, and an array of five tweeters, Apple says youâll get a âgroundbreaking listening experience.â Par for the course on Applespeak, but the audio quality was never one of our issues with the HomePod.
It now comes equipped with a new room-sensing technology. With the ability to recognize sound reflections from nearby surfaces, the HomePod can identify whether itâs against a wall or freestanding and adjust the sound according to its specific placement in the room for clearer audio. Weâve seen variations of this technology from audio brands before, as well as from smart speaker manufacturers like Google. For a more immersive experience, you can pair two HomePod speakers for stereo sound, and yes, you can also pair it with the HomePod Mini for multiroom audio.
This new model also includes the Ultra Wideband technology we first saw on the HomePod Mini back in 2021, which allows you to hand off media from your iPhone to the HomePod. You can transfer whatever audio is playing on your iPhone (like a podcast or phone call) to the HomePod when both devices are near each other, perfect for when you arrive home and want to go hands-free. With Find My support, you can also use the speaker to locate your iPhone by playing a sound on the lost device.
As for those improved smart home features, youâll now be able to use your HomePod to listen for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms using its Sound Recognition feature (originally launched with iOS 14). Weirdly, this wonât be available at launch but will make its way to the speaker via a software update in June. If the HomePod detects these sounds, itâll send a notification to your iPhone immediately (these features are already available in Google and Amazon smart speakers as well).Â
Meanwhile, with the new temperature and humidity sensor, the speaker can measure indoor environmentsâa less universal feature thatâs only available on select hardware from competitors. You can use this data to set automation to, for example, turn the AC on or shut the blinds when a room reaches a certain temperature.Â
As usual, you can ask Siri virtually anything and get some answers out of the voice assistant, but you can also use it to control smart home devices. When such devices arenât within view, Apple has added a new confirmation tone so you know your command has gone through. With support for Matter, youâll now be able to pair and control a wider range of accessories with the HomePodâmaking it a more tantalizing option for iPhone owners who previously felt limited by the number of HomeKit-enabled products. Just remember that your smart home device needs to support the Matter standard as well.Â
None of these additions to the new second-gen HomePod are groundbreaking in any way. Apple was already late to the smart speaker market, which has struggled to innovate, and Appleâs options remain much pricier than those from the likes of Google and Amazon. Apple also has yet to include native Spotify support, which means playing music as a Spotify subscriber is a little more cumbersome than with other supported platforms, like Apple Music (which requires a subscription) and Pandora.Â
If youâre entrenched in Appleâs ecosystem with an iPhone or HomeKit smart home devices, or are an Apple Music subscriber, the high cost may be worthwhileâespecially since Apple claims Siri data is not used to build a marketing profile or sold to third parties. Weâll reserve full judgment on the new HomePod when we get our hands on it.
