i am running the latest version of Spiceworks. However I have been running it for a while now, and I am sure I have messed it up over the years!!<\/p>\n
As I only have a small network, I am going to unistall and reinstall on Monday!<\/p>\n
Thanks anyway - it makes sense, so if the problem starts again I will know what to do<\/p>\n

Well, I uninstalled and re-installed and all my problems went away! Hi,
What version of Spiceworks are you running? This was a known bug in early versions of 3.0.

Well, I uninstalled and re-installed and all my problems went away! Spiceworks also seemed faster (!) and one of the machines that refused to be recognised is now happily inventoried!
