I was talking to a friend last week about a job we both worked at at one time, he and I left some years ago.

But we had two things happen there one he quit because of our Boss, I begged him not to but he actually showed up at the Corp office where I worked (he worked in another place 40 miles away) and turned his stuff in and quit on the spot.

So they eventually fired my boss I had to gather the evidence and he was gone.

So we hired a new guy, I didn’t like him from the beginning…

His first email blast that went out he signed it “The Bill”

Anyhoo, walking into our onsite server room in a building we had built he started asking crazy questions like backing up to the cloud. We had only a T1 and had 4Tb of data, I said Huh?
Then we were showing him other stuff what each servers role was, "This server does this and the users drives are mapped to it.
He says “Mapped to it? How?” yep he actually said that.

So later on one of our employees died, he was the Backup guy Tapes at the time.

So asked me to come down to the office 40 miles from the Corp Office (We already had 2 guys down there even after the other guy passed away) and says “Okay learn the backups and I need you to start doing the Backups by tomorrow.”

I said these guys know how to do them, I’ve never touched this stuff and don’t know IP’s, Logins or anything on this…he said “Well learn it.” OMG SMFH…

Anyhoo anytime we needed to do anything he wanted to watch it, we had to put a ticket in for any Adds, Moves or Changes and he was cc’d on it,

I talked to one of the guys one day and asked “Do you think he knows what he doing?”

It was a definite NO from him and now he was ready to quit (and eventually did as he worked with him on a daily basis).

So I was like, okay I know the Servers, Phone system (I was the one who got that myself), Firewalls just need to know the little stuff, backups etc… but the other guys did so I said “We need to start documenting processes and let’s start with backups.”

Anyway he and another employee we think lied on Certifications both said they had MCSE so I told HR to ask for they’re cards or cert number.

Nope, I said did Security do and investigation on both? Not yet…

Well then Muh ha ha here we go…

We are a Gov Contracting Agency so I said If one of them is lying and the Gov (DoJ, DoD, Pentagon) find out you will lose ALL Contracts, that’s why I’m here.

I said that guy doing RFP’s you just hired lost our Contract where I previously worked and he was written in the Papers for it, see it HERE . This was because and right after 9/11.

Neither of them knew crap about there jobs and were using US to learn the jobs…

The RFP guy was fired 2 weeks later and my Boss was again fired BUT, the people responsible for hiring them AND the Head Security were fired as well 3 weeks later.

Not quite the same.

There was a guy taken on as “IT Consultant”; he made a lot of decisions for the company, and it has to be said, some of them were not really quite the best. He actually admitted to HR, that he didn’t know a great deal about IT and got the job purely on the strength of his relationship with the other directors and his charm. He was heavily reliant on staff to do the actual work, most of whom were learning on the job.

Later, the “consultant” was offered a directorship; sales & marketing. Again, it has to be said that he didn’t really seem to know enough about what’s involved to get the sales staff working to the best. Again, very reliant on the sales staff to manage themselves.

My predecessor as IT Manager was there for about 3 years; and although he made some changes, they were not enough to really make a difference. I think he left partly because he was fed up with the interference and wasn’t strong enough to stand up to the guy.

Only when I came on board did we start to get things moving. I massively improved the IT service delivery whilst ignoring every bit of “advice” the director offered, and in the process, cut the costs. I used to prepare reports for the directors, which he would “interpret” for them, usually getting stuff wrong in the process; and I would then have to spend time correcting his errors.

The best bit; I actually made a sale for the company. A really big one too. I was told later on that it made me the highest performing sales person for the whole company for that quarter. But I didn’t get the sales commission; that paid for a night out and the rest was shared out amongst the other sales staff.

Having made his money, he moved on. TBH, I don’t think anyone missed him.
