Nintendo Switch 2: Official FCC report confirms Wi-Fi 6 support, NFC/RFID tech for amiibo, model number, and dual USB-C charging

Wi-Fi 6 NFC amiibo?
How much will Nintendo Switch 2 cost?

We are quickly closing in on the scheduled official Nintendo Direct showcase for Switch 2 – it is now just over 3 weeks away folks – and some new details on the console have surfaced courtesy of an official Federal Communication Commission (FCC) filing. Previously patens all but confuted the existence of mouse mode for the new Switch 2 Joy-Con alongside a reversible display and a look at the drawings of a new charger, but FCC report that has now surfaced is giving us some official details on NFC support, dual USB-C charging, and more.

Charge Nintendo Switch 2 via both USB-C ports

We know for sure the Switch 2 will feature a centered-positioned USB-C port along the bottom of the console, likely to connect it to the dock, as well as a second-port positioned to the side as well. Many have speculated this, in combination with patents that suggest the Joy-Con will be reversible and the display will auto rotate to accommodate, would likely allow for support for a breadth of new accessories, quite possibly including a secondary display (a new smartphone clip accessory patent was spotted recently).

However the newly surfaced FCC filing confirms that both USB-C ports can be used for charging – up until this point it was unclear if that was the case, according to reports. There are no direct specifics on whether or not Switch 2 will have faster charging speeds, however. The Switch 2 is rated for a 15V much like the original Switch, the fillings reveal, and there is also mention of a 20V AC adapter, but it is still unclear whether or not the console will support USB-C Power Delivery tech.

This part of the document says “The EUT is equipped with two rechargeable USB ports (you and bottom side)”

Will Nintendo Switch 2 support amiibo via NFC tech?

Until now it was all speculation as to whether or not Nintendo would continue its NFC integration for amiibo and other functionality on Switch 2, but the FCC report seems to confirm it will. It also confirms the return of an RFID feature located in the right Joy-Con.

Nintendo Switch 2 Wi-Fi connectivity?

There is no mention of Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, but things are getting faster this time around. The filing mentions support for Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) at an up to 80MHz bandwidth – tests have only been run on 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks not the faster 6GHz we have seen across the consumer networking and tech space.

What is the Nintendo Switch 2 model number?

That’s about it for the new features mentioned in the FCC report – Wi-Fi 6, NFC and RFID confirmed, and charging via both USB-C ports – but it also shows the Nintendo Switch 2 model number as well. Continuing the 001 trend we have seen across the Switch gear over the last several years, the Switch 2 has been designated BEE-001 – BEE is the general Switch 2 designation and 001 marks the main console. The BEE-012 is the left Joy-Con and BEE-014 is the right.
