I am going to be bringing in a 2008R2 domain controller into a (currently 2003 domain). Functional level is at 2003 for both forrest and domain.

I know I need to run adprep /forestprep and /rodcprep and /domainprep

My question is this. After I run those, do I need to immediately put in the 2008R2 server or can i run (lets say infinitely) just with 2003 servers until I drop in the 2008R2 server?

thanks!

{"@type":"Person
{"@type":"Answer

I believe you can continue to run using the existing 2003 AD controller provided you don’t raise the functionality level or migrate any of the roles.

{"@type":"Person
[{"@type":"Answer

Sorry to be ‘that guy’, but why are you not standing up a 2012 R2 server? The ADPREP process is all automated now.

{"@type":"Person
Little-Green-Man
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/Little-Green-Man"}},{"@type":"Answer

There’s no need to run the *preps until you plan on putting in the DC. And like Bill (LGM) mentioned, installing a DC in Server 2012 R2 is slick and runs those commands automatically now.

{"@type":"Person
billmorrow
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/billmorrow"}},{"@type":"Answer
