Hey, just a quick question.
We are going to be updating a clients existing 24 Port PoE switches with some newer, gigabit ones. (They have two offices, both on 24 -Port 100mb PoE Switches).
The first office is going to be needing a 48 Port switch to leave room for future expansion, while the second office should be fine with a 24 Port.
I have found a couple of switches, but what bothers me the most is they need a 24 Port switch and they will need almost of the available ports as PoE. (Same as 48-Port) The phones they use use at most 9.3W of power draw.
Do you guys know of any decent switches to recommend?

If Cisco is to rich for your pocket (they are best of breed though) you should perhaps consider these . I’ve used them, and i have no reason to complain about them, they are solid.

Procurve. Look into one of their Chasis and /or multi port PoE Plus solutions. Lifetime Warranty no questions asked, next day replacement.
We swear by them!!!
Dell PoE switches are good. I used those exclusively for voip back when i was in managed services.

I am using Dell 5548P and have not had any problems with them for the 2 years that I have had them. They also replaced 100Mb switches. I also have Adtran Netvanta 1534P 24 port switches, which are more user friendly in terms of the web UI, but I had 2 ports go out on one. They replaced it under the lifetime warranty.
We use HP Procurves. Have never had a problem getting one replaced when it failed.

Everyone keeps lumping the SG300’s into the expensive category! They are VERY affordable! And they also feature a limited lifetime warranty:
Cisco Limited Lifetime Hardware Warranty: Cisco 300 Series Switches offer a limited lifetime hardware warranty with next business day advance replacement (where available, otherwise same day ship) and a limited lifetime warranty for fans and power supplies. In addition, Cisco offers software application updates for bug fixes for the warranty term, and telephone technical support at no charge for the first 12 months following the date of purchase. To download software updates, go to: www.cisco.com/cisco/web/download/index.html.
I have them all over my company (all PoE) in various port sizes (10 to 52 ports) and have yet to have one fail or even act up! Switched to them several years ago. Just wanted everyone to know!
Forget that over-priced HP and Cisco garbage. We use these, stackable, with a high-speed HDMI backbone link (so you don’t waste ports interconnecting the switches, basic web-based management, and very decent price for 48 PoE ports:

Or get them from amazon.com for right around a grand each.

+1 for the HP Procurve Switch - Have 4 of these switches, Life time guarantee, next day parts…hard to beat.
Meraki. Take a look at the MS22P and MS42P here You’ll have them configured, VPN’d, etc before they even arrive on-site or get unloaded off the FedEx truck. Plug them in and you’re done inside of 8 minutes. Reconfigure and service them from anywhere in the world.
Meraki equipment is simply worth it’s weight in gold.
A switch is a switch. The real question is, other than POE power, what more do you want your switches to do. If your network is Flat and all you want is connectivity then any of the above switches are fine. However, if you want to give each user a unique experience and see what type of packets are being used then you should consider researching ENTERASYS… All the features you need with 100% in source support. Lifetime warranty… etc…
Yeah - except if you stop paying them every month. Then you have a switch that is stuck in it’s current config and can never be modified. Or if your Internet connection is down, then it also can’t be managed. (P.S. If you can’t tell, I think cloud-managed equipment is the dumbest idea ever)
I like Cisco, but if that’s not in your budget Netgear has some good stuff too…

Those look great, Mike. Would you stake your name on them? Have you used them for a while in production?
It better be - their prices are absurd.
I would not discount the SG500 series as well, if stacking is likely to be a near future need, and redundancy of the stack ports is important.
There is a lot of volatility currently in the pricing of the SG500’s - TigerDirect has them for little more than the 300’s.
Thanks guys, looks like it will probably be the 300P series from Cisco. Client doesn’t want to spend too much (which one does…)
