I’ve seen varying articles on this and I’m curious as to what the general consensus is.

We currently have 3 domain controllers (overkill for our current size for sure but it is what it is) all 3 our currently global catalogs.

I was told that all 3 should rotate in terms of primary and secondary DNS. 1 should point to 2 as its primary and 3 as its secondary. 2 should point to 3 as its primary 1 as its secondary, etc…

But based on a conversation in another thread here where someone is having problems with their secondary controller the consensus seems to be that DC’s should point to themselves as their primary DNS? Does it matter where they point to as their secondary?

{"@type":"Person
{"@type":"Answer

MS recommended best practice is for all DCs to use themselves for primary DNS.

Secondary DNS should be set based on highest availability and highest access speed. This may leave you with multiple DCs using the same secondary depending on your topology and equipment.

{"@type":"Person
[{"@type":"Answer

Microsoft recommends that in most scenario’s a DC use itself as the primary DNS and another DC as the secondary.

Is there a best practice for DC’s doc? Don’t have the links right now, but I’m pretty sure they’re buried here on Spiceworks somewhere (there are a few threads where Martin9700 and I argued about it!), but there are some docs where MS recommends one way, and other docs where they recommend the other way.

{"@type":"Person
christophero
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/christophero"}},{"@type":"Answer

Mark Minasi is quite consistent in his book and training materials.

I don’t ever recall seeing an MS doc saying not to use local DNS, but I recall a few saying not to use a secondary at all. Kind of in the same vein as only using DHCP for servers.

{"@type":"Person
tim7139
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/tim7139"}},{"@type":"Answer
